The following missive dedicated to use of stinging nettle in CBT is based on experience. It is clearly not suitable for any one allergic to stinging nettles. Arm yourself with a pair of thick gloves.

Cut down a good quantity of fresh nettles. The best ones are young with pliable stems. A shopping bag full is about fine.

Take a nettle and brush it against the head of your penis. If you haven’t got an erection so far, this should bring one on. It doesn’t hurt much, the sensation is rather good in fact.

Brush some more nettles against your penis, the shaft as well. Gradually a rash will appear and little bumps. Keep going. The more you do, the greater the numbing effect so the next bit will be easier.

The sensation is now between pain and pleasure. The nettles hurt, but the penis becomes super sensitive. As you go on the sensitivity will increase.

Some experienced players do use this type of candle. It can cause second or third degree burns. Avoid beef tallow candles. Wax made from animal fat can be extremely hot and cause burning. Avoid candles with metallic colors. These often contain poisonous metalic salts. Avoid candles with metal wicks, metal wick can drip hot molten metal on the submissive. Avoid scented candles. Scented candles burn at a higher temperature and may cause scalding. Perfumes, hardeners, and other additives can, and have, caused serious allergic reactions.

So paraffin is the best type of wax. Paraffin waxes are very stable. They do not chemically react with either concentrated alkalines or acids. Straight unadulterated paraffin wax is unlikely to cause any sort of reaction. However unless you make your own candles you probably won’t be able to get pure old paraffin wax. The plain white candles are probably the most trustworthy. They are usually relatively pure, cheap and utilitarian. They usually don’t have the hardeners which make the melting temperature shoot up.

Color does affect the temperature at which candles melt. Darker colors also mean more additives. Red candles tend to drip hotter than black or white. Additives do make a difference, but the ones to watch out for are hardeners such as those used in dripless candles. These are generally various sorts of oil-soluble dyes and, for some, can be a skin irritant. Some of these dyes can also stain both skin and clothing. It is best to start off with wax that has no added colors.

A good candy thermometer is required to determine the temperature of the melted wax. Some temperatures at which wax become liquid (melt):
Raw paraffin (soft): 115°-126°F
Votive candles (harder): 131°-141°F
Taper-type candles (hard): 141°F or higher
Hurricane lamp candles (hard): 154°F or higher
Beeswax (waxy to hard): 146°F or higher

If you spill hot water at temperatures above 140°F on yourself, you will likely get a burn. However, scalding water doesn’t stick to the skin, hot wax does. Wax also retains heat, so 140°F and hotter wax is very likely going to create an even nastier burn than water at the same temperature. As a general rule, the wax temperature at skin contact should never be above about 135°F. The ideal working temperature at skin contact is generally around 120°-125°F.

The best way to see how a candle feels is to test it out on yourself. The temperature of wax can be tested on the inside of your wrist. Use the sensitive skin on your wrist or elbow to get a feel for how hot this candle is. Never use hot wax on a submissive that you haven’t tested the temperature on your own body first. If you want to minimize pain, you can sharpen the nails further before sterilizing them. But in general this is bad idea. Nails come in a smooth form that would be more likely to slide through the flesh then would a sharpened nail. Sharpening the nail would leave file marks which would tear flesh as opposed to slicing through. Look at your box of nails for the smoothest ones, they do vary.

The nails should be made of stainless steel. Iron nails in particular, even brand new and sterilized, there can still be a hint of oxidation on the surface that can cause a problem, as iron begins to oxidize the moment air touches it. Aluminum nails are a bit too weak and tend to break at the wrong time. Be carefull with some panel nails, they are grooved. Nails usually come in a box with a light coating of oil on them so cleaning them would be a good idea. You can try 6p-8p finishing nail as these are long enough to keep you from hitting your finger and mixing your blood. The higher the guage or nail (2p-4p-6p-8p) the thicker the nail will be. The nails shouldn’t be too large as in order to heal properly (the edges of flesh have to rejoin) after play. You might want to let the wounds bleed for a bit afterwards to help flush them.

For those who don’t want to go that far try veterinary needles 10-12 gauge with metal reusable ferrules (the big end). You can pound them like nails but they will be a lot sharper. Or try long hat or stage pins or map pins or even just have your nips saftey pinned to something; the bed, a pillow, a cork bulletin board etc. Later on one can move to actual nails as in small diameter ones. This has the advantage of more drama.

The nails, the hammer, the flesh should all be sterilized. For implements boiling in water for 30 minutes to an hour, soaking them in alcohol for 6 hours (longer if they aren’t smooth), for the flesh a surgical scrub such as betadine. Of antiseptics, betadine is the best. Rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizers are also effective, but once they evaporate, recontamination is possible. Betadine, once on, can continue to destroy pathogens (within reason, of course, saliva may prove to contain too much bacteria to be neutralized). As a contact antiseptic, be sure to scrub nooks and crannies, like under the fingernails. Check for allergic reactions (very little likelihood, but let’s not be careless). There are “cold sterilants” out there which can be used to sterilize equipment, not sure if you can these at surgical supply stores, but it never hurts to ask. If you know any piercers they will probably be willing to autoclave the nails for you before hand. Boiling and autoclaving are effective for sterilization, but things don’t stay sterilized – touching the implements will contaminate them and reintroduce the risk of infection.

The type of wood, a clean board made of hardwood is best. Exactly the board used should be made of a fine grained medium hard wood. It doesn’t eliminate the need for caution though. Wood is organic. It carries bacteria which can cause infection. So when removing the sharp pointy things, you need to do it in 2 stages. First, you have to remove the wood, without letting the nails retract back into the flesh. Once that’s done, the sharp ends must be wiped down with betadine. Make sure the no wood particles remain. In many instances the nail, when pulled out will carry bits of wood with it which become lodged in the tissue and causes infection and maybe an abscess. What will be better in this form of play is the nail is removed from the wood, wiped with a clean lint free cloth soaked in a surgical scrub before being pulled out through the breast. This won’t guarantee that infection won’t set in, but may help reduce the risk of it.

There is an opinion that the nails can be left in for practically (within reason of course) any length of time. But this is not studied.

It’s not necessary to drive the nail deep into the board, doing so would make it undoubtedly harder to remove. The best way to remove a nail from a board is pulling it out with the other end of the hammer. Please remember that it hurts more coming out than going in. Have an alternative way of removing the nail, claw hammer and block, pry bar and block, etc. Cutting the top of the nail and lifting breasts off is not a good idea. You probably think that it is hard to remove a nail from a board without using some sort of fulcrum/leverage action against the board and the nail head. Cutting the nails to get them out as any cut from a saw or a nipper will leave a jagged burr or two that will have to go through the tissue. The ragged edge left by a cutter will require a lot of difficult work to smooth before pulling through. Also, as it has been mentioned above, ridges and twists, as instance after cutting the top of the nail, are good places for bacteria and other organic material to linger. So lifting the breast up a bit and cutting the nail between the breast and the board or cutting the top of the nail can be considered only as an alternative way.

Leather and rope can both be cut, not made secure and dangerously tight. Steel bondage involves metal restraints, usually made of iron or steel, such as handcuffs or shackles. This is the best way for those who like realism in bondage. Steel bondage appeals to people for a number of reasons: there is the contrast between the soft flesh and hard steel, steel bondage has a feeling of inescapability about it, it is also quick to apply and requires little forethought or planning.

Due to the unforgiving nature of metal versus flesh, steel bondage has its own set of safety issues. Unfortunately, many tops who use handcuffs are not familiar with their tools. – DON’T BUY CHEAP HANDCUFFS.
Most cheap cuffs can be easily broken or forced open. A good pair of handcuffs bought in a police-supply store or ordered from a reputable specialty supplier will cost little mere than junk cuffs sold by porn shops. For modern-style U.S.-made cuffs, look for those from Peerless, Smith & Wesson, Jay-Pee, or the American Handcuff Co. The best old-style (non-swing-through) cuffs are Hiatts (made in England).

– DON’T MAKE CUFFS TOO TIGHT.
The point of steel bondage is that it doesn’t *have* to be tight to be secure. Don’t tighten cuffs more than necessary; as long as the cuff won’t slip off, it’s tight enough. It should still be easy to move the cuff on your sub’s wrist after it is locked and set; assuming no tension is applied to the fastening point, the cuff bows should not press into the skin at any point.

– DON’T TIGHTEN LEG IRONS.
Leg irons don’t have to be tight to stay on. If they are, the bottom won’t be able to walk, and the pressure could damage the Achilles tendons or bruise the ankles. Leg irons over boots are best if the sub will have to move around in them.

– DON’T GET TAKEN BY RIP-OFF STORES.
Smith & Wesson high-security cuffs cost a bit more, as do specialty models such as hinged cuffs.

– KEEP EXTRA KEYS HANDY.
Nothing can ruin a scene quicker than trying to remove the bottom’s restraints (or those you’ve put on yourself) and finding that you can’t locate the keys.

– NEVER SUSPEND YOUR PRISONER BY STEEL RESTRAINTS OR MAKE THE PRISONER LIE ON HIS/HER CUFFED WRISTS.
This can cause serious nerve damage. Suspending the arms above the head with steel cuffs, even with feet or body firmly planted on the floor, can cause damage if the tension is great or the position held for more than a few minutes.

– ALWAYS DOUBLE-LOCK CUFFS AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN APPLIED.
Cuffs that have not been double-locked can tighten on the wrists if the sub struggles or changes position and thereby cause damage to the nerves.

– DON’T APPLY HANDCUFFS BY SWINGING THEM TOWARD THE WRISTS FROM A DISTANCE.
You can break someone’s wrist or arm that way. The outer edge of the cuff should just touch the wrist as you apply it; a short downward snap will swing the bow up through the locking part of the cuff and then back down and around the wrist. Practice snapping cuffs onto yourself until you get the technique down right. If it hurts you, it’s going to hurt your sub.

– DON’T BUY CUFFS WITHOUT A DOUBLE-LOCK MECHANISM.
Usually, the set-look is closed by inserting the pointed tip of the handcuff key into a small hole on the top of the lock ease of the cuffs; the setlock is opened by turning the key backward in the normal keyhole. Don’t buy cuffs with lever-operated set-locks, which are typical of cheap manufacture. Lever-operated set-locks can easily open unintentionally and become loose and unreliable after a period of use.

Unless secured otherwise, cuffs attached in front can be a dangerous weapon. There are a variety of ways in which the nettle plant can be used. Stinging nettles are soft and lightweight, practically any body part can be punished this way, if desired, including the breasts, genitals and similar sensitive areas. Nettles are best used in a gentle stroking or dabbing action, which will cause those stinging hairs that come into contact with the recipient’s skin to work their effect, without damaging the remaining hairs. They can be put into bras, pants, tights, or other close-fitting gear, even into condoms. Men who wear condoms have found that briefly applying nettles to the penis before putting on the condom can compensate for the sensation lost by the latex barrier. Nettle, as well as the usage of any foreign object not specifically designed with BDSM in mind, should be used with caution. Keep away from the face of course, but apart from that it depends on the sensitivity and tolerance of the recipient. The mucous membranes (e.g. tip of the penis, vaginal area, anus) are the most sensitive and are best avoided until it is known that the recipient will suffer no unwanted after effects.

The top should handle nettles with care. The stem ends can be wrapped with tape or cloth to make a handle. Leather or heavy rubber gloves are recommended, even though there are few hairs at the base of the stem where the top is likely to be holding the plant. The hairs are sharp enough to penetrate cotton or thin latex gloves.

A possible health risk that comes with nettle play is an allergic reaction. Some people are more sensitive to nettle stings than others and it would be foolish to continue any BDSM session if there is generalised swelling and unusual inflammation. This is good reason, in BDSM practice, to establish the responses of the recipient before any extensive use of nettles. Clothespins can be a wonderful addition to BDSM play and are relatively easy to learn how to use. Many new comers to the BDSM start with things like clothespins. Clothespins are usually used to give the sensation of pain to certain body parts. They can create many sensations and even increase the intensity of orgasm. With some caution and imagination clothespins can be used in any number of deviously enjoyable ways.

Most frequently, clothespins are used on the tits, especially on nipples. Clothespins can be placed on the nipples in many positions. You can start from clothespins pointing straight onto the nipple, not from the side, gripping the base of the nipple, not the tip. Don’t allow any clamping device to remain in place longer than 20 minutes maximum! The clothespins create the erotic sensations by cutting off the blood circulation. Feet whippings extend back through history. Bastinado is considered to be extremely painful and has long been used in interrogation and torture activities. Some sources mention the bastinado as one of the tortures of the Inquisition, but it was probably only a conventional caning. In the China it was a punishment that consisted in giving moderate blows with a long light cane, usually bamboo, for an hour or more on the buttocks or on the soles of the feet. The Chinese practiced their techniques on blocks of bean curd to learn to hit the surface without breaking the skin so they could learn how to produce great pain while only leaving the lightest marks. Some of the Asian cultures tend to use small rattan canes to beat the soles of the feet of their children and wife. The falaka is used in judicial and domestic punishments. It seems to be used as corporal punishment legally at Iran, and illegally, as torture, in most Middle East countries.

The terror of bastinado lies not in the severity of the blows, which are on the contrary scarcely more than tapping, but in its long continuation. During bastinado, a victim’s legs are usually bound together and often tied to a horizontal length of wood, so the feet are exposed to the torturer. Anything from a club to a slender bamboo wand is used to inflict the punishment. The pain radiates up the legs, coursing through the body and up to the head. After the torture, the prisoner might be forced to walk around, sometimes carrying weights on his back.

But bastinado is someting more than a corporal punishment. It is not only feet whipping. Bastinado is an any form of pain play involving inflicting pain on the soles of the feet. It is also a form of torture. This method of torture relies on the fact that the foot is a fragile appendage with numerous bones, tendons, joints, and muscles. It is also a place where nerve endings are close to the surface and therefore especially susceptible to pain. Such violence applied to the foot is particularly unpleasant. The wounds inflicted are particularly painful and take a long time to heal, rendering it a redoubtable deterrent but impractical as punishment for useful surbordinates.

The furthest extensions of bastinado include even a removal of the feet. This and ‘hobbling’ were practices performed to prevent escape and permanently enslave the victim without the need of constant monitoring.

And sometimes bastinado is not only pain. Some point out that the prominent display of the sub’s bare feet contains an element of punitive humiliation as well.

Please remember that the feet need careful preparation before being subjected to the bastinado. The way you remove your victims shoes and socks is an import part of the bastinado punishment. Some people enjoy tying down the victim and removing his shoes and socks themselves. Other people enjoy making their victim strip their own feet for punishment.

The foot is an extremely fragile and delicate machine. There are numerous bones, tendons, joints, muscles and tissues which are vulnerable to significant injury. What is perhaps more significant is that most of the bodies nerve system has nerve endings which are somewhat exposed in the feet. A severe beating to the feet can cause injury over the entirety of the body, not just the feet. A severe beating can destroy or damage any of the foots many complicated and complex systems, reducing or impairing the individuals ability to walk or doing significant long term harm to that person.

Use a small switch or cane. Never use a paddle, heavy rod, crop or other hard object to strike the foot. You are not trying to break bones here. The bones of the feet are quite small and very easy to break. Protect the areas around the foot such as ankles and toes. You can wrap the foot in a towel exposing only the soles to prevent inadvertent injury. Use objects that will sting but not damage. Do not try to whip or cane the feet until bruising. Do not try to break the skin or leave visible welts. Go for sensation but not damage.

You can safely include the soles of the feet in candle and ice play. You can with relative safety use ‘doctored’ clothespins in and around the toe area as you might on the webbing between the fingers of the hand. Remember to allow clothespins on any area of the skin for short bursts of time – recommended time is 7 minutes. Longer clamping of the skin can cause permanent tissue damage. A cane is a long stick, generally of bamboo, malacca (rattan), or some similar plant, used as a walking stick; as a support for growing plants; for marking out a piece of ground; or as a material for consturcting furniture or buildings. Rattan canes are used to beat the buttocks or palm as a form of corporal punishment.

Caning was practiced as a judicial punishment for juveniles but was best known as a method of discipline in schools. Use of the cane was standard in English schools of all descriptions throughout the 19th and most of the 20th centuries, with the frequency and severity of canings determined by the traditions of the school. Judicial caning, carried out with a long rattan rod, was a feature of some colonial judicial systems.

Now caning is the SM technique of consensually striking someone (most commonly on the buttocks) with a cane for mutual erotic pleasure. Care should be taken to observe all appropriate safety precautions. In the context of this document, the “bottom” is the person receiving the caning, and the “top” is the person issuing the caning.

Some Caning Hints:

Sealing a sanded cane with repeated light coatings of shellac, varnish, or polyurethane prevents it from soaking up bodily fluids.
