“Martyrs” is a French film. The French can make very strong horror movies. If the audience is open-minded and strong-willed enough to go along with “Martyrs”, they’ll find a movie that is possibly the best of the recent spate of high quality horror films coming out of France. The film is written and directed by Pascal Laugier. “Martyrs” stars Morjana Alaoui as Anna and Mylene Jampanoi as Lucie with support given by Catherine Begin as Mademoiselle, Robert Toupin as Le pere, and Isabelle Chasse as La Creature.

“Martyrs” covers a lot of ground and is at once a dark love story, a tragedy, a science fiction fantasy, a revenge flick, a speculation on religion, and yes, a horror film that fetishizes torture more than any other film in recent history, but in a completely different way that could never be considered “porn”. If at any point during the film you think you’ve figured out what “Martyrs” is all about, keep doubting. This movie is so deep that a coherent discussion of its subject is deemed too superficial.

France. A night at the beginning of the 1970s. Lucie, a girl missing for over a year, is discovered wandering by the side of a country road. Near catatonic, she can say nothing about what has happened to her. The cops quickly find the place in which she’s been incarcerated – a disused slaughterhouse. Every indication is that she never once left the empty, freezing room in which she was imprisoned. Filthy, starving, dehydrated, the girl’s body nonetheless bears no traces of sexual abuse, this was something far stranger. When she is placed in a youth home to live, Lucie is befriended by Anna. Anna looks after Lucie and eventually they become best friends. Lucie, however, is being stalked by a ghoul taking the form of a thin, naked woman with pale gray skin that cuts and mutilates Lucie. Anna is sworn to keep Lucie’s secret about the shadowy creature.

The movie now transports us 15 years ahead into 1986. Lucie is attacked by the creature yet again. The creature is actually another woman who was kidnapped and tortured with Lucie those many years ago. When Lucie realizes this, she remembers that she had an opportunity to save the woman when she escaped but she didn’t. She left the woman there to continue to be tortured. Later, we find out what becomes of this other women. At this point, Lucie is overcome with feelings of remorse and kills herself with by slicing her own throat.

Now, if “Martyrs” were a typical torture-porn film this is where it would end. This would be the point. But Laugier wants more than that and just when you think you’ve got the film figured out he pulls the rug out and takes it somewhere else entirely, somewhere completely unexpected. “Martyrs” is, indeed, a stunningly graphic film. In fact you could argue that “Martyrs” is an anti-exploitation exploitation film, a film filled with incredibly extreme elements, true, but a film that has no interest in using those elements to titillate or fill the audience with vicarious thrills. No, the shock elements are there to open the door to something far more substantial.

Midway, as “Martyrs” story unfolds to reveal more of the bigger picture, the film takes a dramatic shift and switches to Anna and a new chapter. Moving into even darker, scarier territory Anna uncovers a secret room where a woman, apparently another torture subject is being held. Anna discovers a secret tunnel behind a cabinet. Inside is a hidden staircase that leads down into a large underground torture chamber. The walls of the complex are adorned with photos of suffering people. Inside is a naked woman chained to the wall. A metal blindfold is secured to her head with rivets. Anna frees the woman and takes her up the stairs. She tries to help this woman and give her a bathe, but the woman is completely out of her mind and starts mutilating herself and tries to cut off her own arm. The final 30 minutes include some of the most intense scenes. Anna becomes a religious test subject for a group of mute zealots, a secret society seeking to discover the secrets of the afterlife through the creation of “martyrs.” Systematic acts of torture are inflicted upon Anna in the belief that the extreme pain will result in a transcendental insight into the world beyond this one. After an unspecified period, during which she is repeatedly beaten and tortured, she is told she has reached the “final stage,” where she is then flayed alive.

It is also at this point in which the majority of people who watch the film become divided and come away loving it, or absolutely loathing it. This second half is enjoyable by any stretch of the imagination, and the amount of pain and torture inflicted is long, repetitive and unrelenting. We would not label it as cruel or worthy of the “torture porn” moniker, as none of the torture is performed for the sake of torture, and the reasons behind the actions are revealed in the final moments. The purpose behind all the pain may seem like someone tried to turn some high school, stoner philosophy into something profound and deep, but there is a purpose nonetheless. It will be up to the viewer to decide if the reasoning given merits watching a young, defenseless girl get punched in the face over and over and over and over again until she is completely unrecognizable.

Pascal Laugier has made statements about this film detailing human pain and its meaning, relief from suffering and transgression. He states that he, like a lot of horror movie lovers, has become bored with the lack of originality in modern horror, and that the bottom line seems to not just be an important aspect of the horror film, but the only aspect. In “Martyrs” the torture is not meant to be entertainment but an intense meditation on violence, pain, immortality, religion.

What makes “Martyrs” work is Laugier’s methodical unfolding of the story. What he does is give us a “glimpse” into the world of the torturer(s) so when the protagonist returns to the scene of the crimes, the viewer knows “kind of” what to expect, which makes them have to endure it with the lead character. Sometimes knowing what’s coming is more difficult than watching it unfold. By the end of the film “Martyrs” becomes immensely uncomfortable, and making it through the final 30 minutes is a tough task. “Martyrs” finishes with a completely satisfying ending. Satisfying, however, doesn’t mean you will be expecting it.

To be sure, “Martyrs” is not the goriest film ever made but the context and the combination of sights, sounds, and mood works together to take you to the edge. The idea that anyone in the real world can be so cruel and sadistic is challenged in “Martyrs”. These people seem real enough and make you think this is more than someone’s fantasy.

One of the best aspects of “Martyrs” is its originality. In fact, much of the movie leaves the viewer in a constant state of trying to figure what exactly is going on. Most other modern horror movies all seem to be just variations on the same thing and once one catches an audience, like “Saw”, it is done to death until everyone is sick of it. Although it seems rushed by this description, “Martyrs” is actually paced well. The pacing is near perfect and there’s not a minute of wasted time in the movie. “Martyrs” plays like a puzzle, where each piece falls into place just in time for the viewer to notice the next piece that’s missing.What makes “Martyrs” so extraordinary is that the story unfolds using the twists of a typical movie, only they’re just a tool to transition to the next scene and don’t make or break the film. Editing work with different camera angles also helps to create the overall mood of the movie. Some of the final shots in the movie turn out to be some of the best and are executed like a well-written poem.

“Martyrs” is definitely not for everyone. The movie is disturbing to be sure. For those that like to have their notions about the world challenged, this is a film that accomplishes just that. In many ways, The Collector feels like another installment in the Saw series. In The Collector, as in the Hostel and Saw movies, the tension of the chase takes second place to the graphic violence of the actual torture. This movie scrapes the bottom of the torture porn barrel by presenting torture for the sake of torture.

The pitch is simple: a workman named Arkin (Josh Stewart) returns to the house he has been working on to steal a valuable gem from the safe. When he gets there, he realizes he has company: a silent invader, wearing the leather mask, has filled the house with traps, locked the doors and windows, and is in the process of torturing the residents to death. Although he’s a burglar, Arkin is also something of a hero and he creeps through the house, one step ahead of the Collector (Juan Fernandez), trying to rescue the occupants. In a nightmarish hour, Arkin faces the moral dilemma of finishing his burglary and saving his own skin, or trying to save this family that employed him. They’re prisoners inside their own home – bloodied and doomed if Arkin doesn’t make the right choice.

That’s as far as we go with a plot. The rest of this film is one bloody, anguishing torture scene after another – limbs crunching in bear traps, tongues being cut off, hair and skin sizzling in battery acid. The Collector will tie you up, drive nails through your feet, remove teeth with a hammer and chisel and sew up your lips, all in the comfort of your own home. This needle-in-the-eye sadism is brought to you by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the minds behind Saw IV through VI.

Every scene deliberately and slowly builds the tension – never turning away from the ultimate gory outcome. The Collector’s choice of weapons adds another level of apprehension. He doesn’t use a slew of preposterous Saw-like torture devices to hunt and trap his victims. Instead, his tools are fairly primitive by comparison and ultimately more terrifying. There’s five or six locks on the front door, a hanging chandelier with knives pointing downward, a dozen bear traps, windows with razor blades, hanging fishhooks, a wall with spikes, a phone receiver with a nail sticking out of it, and various other devices. To top it all off, there’s a vicious dog – you know, just in case.

The movie is shot with style and has some genuine shocks. There’s a weird pervading sense of dread in the daytime scenes at the beginning, including a nice little sequence involving a wasp nest. Everyone has fallen into the spider’s web, as the movie is more than willing to show you in its depiction of bug metaphors. Scenes of Arkin interacting with the family members are given are infused with menace, as if the whole world is not quite right. The camera never lingers. It is horror that relishes in the brutality of the kill rather than forcing the audience to endure the awfulness of the torture. The movie has moments of pure visual punch that are thrilling, boosting the creep factor around the home and setting a forbidding atmosphere of dread in the early going. Dunstan’s heavy-handed style tries to force-feed fear with obnoxious music (which runs throughout the movie with no let-up), pseudo-dramatic slow motion and oodles of “edgy” torture porn aesthetics: dingy basements, oversaturated and decayed effects.

The masked killer is fairly interesting. Unlike most unnamed masked killers, the Collector allows its killer to be seen both as deliberately human and gives him an effectively creepy visage that won’t let you take your eyes off of him for a moment when he’s on screen. He is not a character at all, but rather a force of nature, prowling through the shadows like a creature of the night always out for blood.

We never learn who – or what – this Collector is, or what, exactly, he collects, or even his motivation for slaughtering the already insufferable Chase family. Why the booby traps? Why the torture? Seems like a waste of time if you’re just going to throw people into boxes. Unless of course there are other important aspects to the killer’s psychological makeup which explains why he torments his victims like a kid pulls wings off a fly. And can Arkin eventually stop the Collector? We’ll have to wait for the sequel to find that out…

Let’s talk about “Antichrist”, a horror film directed by maker Lars von Trier, the cult Danish film maker, and starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. When she and her therapist husband (Willem Dafoe) repair to their cabin in the woods, they plunge into a battle between irrational, “female” nature and logical, “male” reason – a fight that culminates in the film’s shocking final moments featuring graphic scenes of sexual mutilation and torture. Failing to find release in spontaneous sex, she becomes increasingly unhinged as the forest around them begins channelling her tormented mind. Her despair promptly ferments into a passionate hatred for her husband, who she subjects to prolonged torture after mutilating herself.

von Trier’s camera does not shy away from genitalia, which we find on display (in close-up) in various stages of arousal and torture. And we become aware of this in the first five minutes of the film. Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg are the couple we see writhing around in passionate embrace on the floor of their laundry room in the film’s black-and-white prologue. Von Trier doesn’t hold back in showing us every intimacy here. Genitalia come back into play with a vengeance in the following scenes. But from now sex will forever be connected with hurt and pain.

The more Dafoe’s character tries to banish his wife’s fear, the more both humans descend into primal violence. He determines that the best way for Her to overcome her fears is to confront them. But Gainsbourg’s character becomes increasingly unstable and determined to take revenge on her husband for the tragedy. Gainsbourg bites Dafoe during foreplay and, even later, begs him to hit her when in the act – Gainsbourg’s character says at one point, “Hit me so it hurts.” Sex and violence intertwined evermore.

In some scenes you’ll feel the pain. In one scene, she hits his genitals so hard that he falls into a coma. In the next scene she jerks his cock untill blood. In another scene, she is shown drilling a hole through his leg with a bit and brace. This film, really transported to greater emotional levels by the sight of she driving a spike through her mate’s leg, pinning it to a boulder and chasing him through the woods with a bloody knife. Then Gainsbourg’s character performs an act of genital self-mutilation with a pair of rusty scissors. She cut off own clitoris.

Gruesome torture and self-mutilation are carried out by Von Trier’s characters in the same no-holds-barred style as the sex scenes, which later included an interlude among the gnarled roots of a tree in which, when the camera pulls back, we see dozens of arms reaching out from among the roots. The graphic torture is painful to watch, including a scene in which he is whacked by a thick board.

But in truth, our opinion is that there’s nothing here that the torture porn horrors like “Hostel” and “Saw” haven’t done already. And besides, “AntiChrist’s” torture scenes are quite brief. The central premise of Lars von Trier’s most nerve-shuddering sojourn yet into the dark corners of the human psyche is: Women – evil or just misunderstood?

The nature in film is imbued with a Satanic element. The wife says at one point that “nature is Satan’s church”. Further, Nature and Satan are demonstrated to be in close connection. They may in fact be two reflections of the same terrifying reality. Is the wilderness a metaphor for humanity’s inner darkness, or man’s eternal struggle with nature? References are made to pagan-worshiping women massacred in the Medieval Ages.

The film has provoked controversy and criticism for being misogynist, but this seems to ignore the dramatic rationale that frames the personal hell von Trier creates. Gainsbourg has defended von Trier against accusations that the film exploits women. “He is depicting women of course with violence and very hard sex and pain and suffering, but I don’t think that he is judging women in a negative way” – she said. Yes, “Antichrist” is harrowing and often shrill, but the horrors all serve the underlying theme that, try as they might, men can never fully understand the inconsolable grief women endure.

Grotesque (Gurotesuku) is a 2009 Japan horror film. Most of the film – written and directed by Koji Shiraishi. It focuses on the assault, humiliation and torture of a young couple (played by Tsugumi Nagasawa and Hiroaki Kawatsure). They are snatched off the street on their first date and wake up shackled and naked in a basement. Without even having the decency to explain why, a particularly sadistic madman (played by Osako Shigeo) proceeds to degrade, torture and mutilate them. Grotesque focuses on the sexual assault, humiliation and extreme torture of a male and female victim. All in the finest tradition of Japanese gore cinema.

The protagonist inflicts serious injuries on a restrained couple. The central character abducts, restrains, strips and masturbates both the man and the woman. After this he inflicts grave injuries on the restrained couple, including amputation, eye gouging, castration and evisceration. The torture becomes even more extreme, leading to the gory and violent death of both hostages.

Still, the film is nihilistic rather than misogynistic, as the maniac is as equal opportunities type guy, dividing his attention fairly between his male and female captive. It certainly does make for hard going at times, with the gore being all the more effective for Koji’s harsh and unremittingly dark approach, offering not even a glimmer of hope, and playing unpleasantly with the viewer by way of a nasty twist halfway through. The film is tense, not so much due to the viewer actually caring about the characters, but as a result of waiting to see what the psycho will do next, or just how far Koji is willing to push things. Clocking in at just 73 minutes, the film is the very epitome of a short, sharp shock, and builds to a bizarre, though highly entertaining and satisfying climax.

Indeed, as a three player piece, with really only one location, most of the money has quite clearly gone on the special effects, which are impressive and convincing. This is undoubtedly a good thing, as it gives viewers a chance to see how the torture porn genre really should be done, freed from the needless niceties of plot and good taste, and simply piling on the gruesome outrages.

The film ends with the killer choosing his next victims…

If being tormented by a crazed killer named Jigsaw as you stumble around a dank, not-so-abandoned old insane asylum filled with freaks and shotgun traps is your idea of a good time, Saw is the game for you. On the other hand, if a highly polished, varied and interesting experience is what you’re looking for, Saw is not it.

Those two ideas are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but Saw is far more successful in conveying atmosphere than it is in delivering the intellectual and motor-response engagement of a fine game.

When it comes to tearing people apart and watching them writhe and howl in agony as they die in gruesome ways, Hollywood special-effects wizards are still far more advanced than digital-game technologies.

In the Saw game players rummage around in search of clues inside cadavers and toilet bowls full of used syringes. Human heads are routinely squashed, ripped off bodies and blown away by explosives. And yet the player is never treated to the sort of lush, saturated close-ups of oozing, gaping wounds that inspired critics to compare the films with sexual pornography in the first place.

Developers and publishers often lament that video games are unfairly held to a stricter standard than films when it comes to explicit content. That there is a higher standard for games is undoubtedly true. Movies routinely win commercial release with R ratings while including sexual and violent material that would be considered unacceptable in a game.

But is such a double standard unfair? Games, after all, are interactive. And with the power of interactivity come responsibilities on the part of writers, designers and developers that go beyond those thrust upon novelists and film directors. With the Saw game, Zombie Studios seems to understand that. As gory as it may be, the game seems to exhibit a modicum of restraint on the part of its designers and artists.

But for all that, what makes a great game is not how it looks but how it plays. And it is quite clear that the Zombie team spent far more time on the visuals than on the play. From a game-play perspective Saw isn’t horrible, but it is not particularly interesting in more than a few spots. There are a handful of puzzle types, like lock picking and circuit rewiring, that are repeated over and over. And how many shotgun traps must one man disarm? Dozens? Hundreds?

Moreover, there may not have been a clumsier, less-responsive combat system in a major game in the last year. Every swing of a baseball bat, pipe or mannequin arm feels as if it is being forced through molasses.

The Saw mythos is about being forced to choose among competing bleak alternatives. So it is fitting that this grimmest of games includes two endings. It is also fitting that neither is at all happy.
