The submissive in accepting this collar from the Dominant is equally serious in their understanding that their relationship has moved into a different stage.

This particular collar is worn by new submissive at various events to show that he/she is under the protection of a Dominant. You may have seen a collar of protection worn by a slave during a play party aligning them with the Dominant that had granted the Protection. All approaches to the submissive wearing this collar should be made through the Dominant whose protection he/she is under. During this time however, the slave will act as if this dominant is the rightful Master or Mistress and refer to them in all areas of service. The collar acts to openly declare to other dominant’s that this submissive is “off-limits” and that honourable dominant’s should not pursue this submissive in any manner. However, the slave retains to right to request a playtime with a specific person or reject it respectfully. This is a temporary collar that it is normally returned after the event has adjourned.

A collar of consideration can be by a bracelet, waist chain, anklet or other choice. The traditional or customary representation of the collar of consideration is a leather collar in some shade of blue. The actual shade of color is not as important as the color itself. This will usually be a very simple collar with no lock or key. No D-ring or one that is very small.

A Training Collar.

This collar represents the second collar exchanged between a Dominant and a submissive. Typically a prelude to a formal collar it is utilized while the sub/slave is being taught and is still learning the specific duties expected by her/his Dominant. In many cases the Dominant and submissive may consider or try living together actively.

The training collar is offered by the Dominant after they have engaged in a period of time where they have held extensive conversations with the submissive and explored characteristics, traits, interests, sexual needs, desires and lifestyles to see if they consider themselves to be a good match in enough areas to move into a relationship of deeper commitment. In many ways this is where the relationship is truly tested physically, mentally and emotionally.

The acceptance of this collar by the submissive indicates that the submissive agrees to pursue a much deeper relationship with the Dominant which will involve or may, serious feelings, emotions, commitments and responsibilities. Most enter a deeper emotional stage at this point and may begin to express true devotion, love, honour and mutual respect.

During this time period he/she is a mere submissive. Submissive is belonging to Dominant, is under training for a specific time frame or for duration. At this point of the journey, he/she is considered the submissive of the dominant, but no contract has been set up as of yet. Submissive could consider this the engagement time. Submissive courtship is over and he/she steady training has begun. Now actions carry consequences and more often or not this is the making or breaking period for many slaves and Dominants. This period of time can vary from couple to couple. It used to be a minimum of 2 years, but each hold their own stock on it. If after this time, the submissive has proven to be the right one and the Master or Mistress also, again yes it goes from both ends, then next stage can be an official Collaring Ceremony.

The traditional training collar is often made of leather. It is generally very plain and may be either red or black. Many Dominants alternatively offer a training collar in chain.

Formal or Slave Collar, or Permanent Collar.

Is given by the Dominant as a symbol of the bond between them. It represents love, honor, respect, and loyalty. This collar is usually presented during a ceremony in front of witnesses and is often accompanied by a permanent mark on the submissive/slave. It is a recognition of commitment, deep emotional feelings, devotion, mutual respect and consideration.

Joy of joys and privilege of privileges. This is the representation of the final stage of commitment. It expresses the belief that the dominant and submissive share a genuine and growing desire to share in each others lives, perhaps the rest of their lives. You are now the honored slave of your Dominant and are fully belonging to him or her. At this point a contract may be drawn up, not unlike a marriage license with both making their rights and responsibilities known to all in attendant. This is one of the most wonderful moments in a slave’s life. It is also a very special moment in the life of a Dominant. You now have achieved something most can only dream about. Usually this collar is presented in a 24/7 lifestyle setting and the slave if lucky is present in the household of the Master or Mistress.

The traditional appearance of the slave collar is a collar made of black leather or metal which is adorned by brass or silver objects or designs. This collar is created specifically for the individual submissive and is often an original design. You may see the addition of a lock and key. A lockable collar may further symbolize a transfer of power from the submissive to the dominant holding the key. Perhaps even a tag that may be attached to the D-ring.

An Ownership Collar.

In some extreme cases the slave isn’t enough. Slave wants to be owned, fully and completely. Slave wants to be the absolute property of the Master/Mistress wants to give the gift of complete life and soul. At this point the Contract is resigned, redone and finalized. You are now no longer your own person, but the property of another human being. This is not only the greatest of honors for a slave but for the Master or Mistress as well. Master or Mistress is Owner from now.
This is a very deep and emotional step, which has gone much further then any vanilla marriage ever could. This is like a marriage without the option of divorce. This will carry on into death.

House Collar.

House collars are used in clubs, homes and in organizations that provide social spaces to protect submissives. House collars show that the submissive is under the guidance of the house and is not to be approached. This is often used with inexperienced submissives who are not ready to make their own choices yet and need time to learn.

Cyber Collar.

These are virtual collars often virtually worn by people who have no idea of the real world. They live the life of a Dominant and slave in their imagination. The garrote, also known as garrote vil, garotte and garrotte – the execution device used by the Spaniards until the end of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship as recently as 1974. In Spain, it was abolished, as well as the death penalty, in 1978 with the new constitution. Originally, it was an execution where the convict was killed by hitting him with a club (“garrote” in Spanish). Later, it was refined and consisted of a seat to restrain the condemned person while the executioner tightened a metal band around his neck with a crank or a wheel until suffocation of the executee. With the handle the executioner slowly crushed the victim’s neck causing death from asphyxia.

The safe prototype of the garrote without movable parts is used now in BDSM play. This device is intended only to fix the submissive without causing an injury of the vital structures of the neck.

This device has a Spanish name because it was improved in Spain. It is not clear how complete earlier records are and even modern ones are somewhat patchy. But at least 736 people, including 16 women, were executed in Spain in the 19th century. 65 men and 2 women were executed by garroting between 1950 and 1974 in various parts of Spain. The first woman to be garroted was Juana Rivero in Madrid on the 3rd of November 1824 for robbery. Twenty seven year old Mariana Pineda became the first woman to suffer for treason when she was executed on the 26th of May 1831 in Andalusia. It was reported that the spike of the garrote pierced her neck and protruded through her mouth. Garroting was last used on the 2nd of March 1974, when two men were executed on the same day for the shooting of a police officer during a robbery.

A few other countries used the garrote now and again. It was used in Spanish colonies, e.g. Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. It also was the official method for ordinary criminals in Portugal up to abolition in 1867.

Garroting appears to have developed from the early Chinese form of execution known as the bow-string. The criminal was tied to an upright post with two holes bored in it through which the ends of a cord from a long bow were passed and pulled tight round the neck by the executioner until the condemned strangled. In later versions the prisoner was seated on a shorter post with his back to the main post and a rope loop was placed round his neck and around the post. The executioner twisted a stick inserted in the loop to tighten the rope and slowly strangle the prisoner.

There were many different types of garrotes used as execution devices. It was originally made of a pole driven in the ground and a rope to tie up round the victim’s neck. But if the pole was not very thick and the rope was tightened behind the pole, the neck of the victim could be tightened more gradually and easily released. The string tying the victim’s neck to the pole could be made of a material that would shrink once wetted, so that the victim would slowly suffocate as it dried. This sort of torture was used all over the world as testified by etchings.

The next form of garrote comprised a wooden stool on which the prisoner sat with his back to the post. A strong wooden chair was used and the condemned was strapped at the wrists, arms, waist and legs. In both types behind the seat, was a substantial post to which was affixed a heavy screw operated by a handle or a weighted lever, in both cases, connected to a spike or a small star shaped blade which ran through the post. When the screw/lever mechanism was operated, the blade entered the criminal’s neck and severed the spinal column, in an attempt to ensure that the prisoner did not strangle to death.

As in most countries, a more humane method of execution was sought and various improvements to the garrote were made. The Spanish version was perfected for this instrument to be used for execution. It had an iron collar that had an iron on its rear which penetrated the cervical vertebrae in a way that the convict died both for asphyxiation and because the spinal cord was crushed. The steel collar must be larger in size than the victim’s neck to prevent strangulation, but, at the same time, tight enough to immobilize the head and the neck. Preventing neck and head movement was necessary because it allowed the victim’s cervical vertebrae to be penetrated by a steel tip, moved by a screw mechanism positioned in the rear of the pole. In theory, such penetration was to be quick and precise, thus, able to administer a rapid and certain death.

Some versions of this device incorporated a fixed metal blade or spike directed at the spinal cord, to hasten the breaking of the neck. The spiked version, called the Catalan garrote, was used as late as 1897 in Spain but would continue up to 1940 in Cuba (as well as being used by some other colonies until shortly after the 1898 Spanish-American War). A further alternate device involved two metallic squares covered with leather, of which the upper one moved over the bottom one when the executioner turned the lever, breaking the inmate’s neck trapped inside. In some versions, two brass collars were used. One collar was attached to the lever whilst the other was fixed to the post. Both collars were hinged to admit the prisoner’s neck. When all preparations were complete, the executioner operated the mechanism forcing one collar outwards whilst the other remained stationary thus, if correctly adjusted, dislocating the prisoner’s neck and causing immediate unconsciousness followed by death.

In most cases, the prisoner lost consciousness quite quickly and was dead after a few minutes. Garrotting, even in its later forms, could never guarantee an instant loss of consciousness and was never considered to be as quick or humane as hanging.

So chastity belts and their usage are rather recent phenomena, and in the vast majority of the cases, women were not forced to use it. Despite the common misconception, the use of the chastity belt was not usually imposed by men on women in order to force them to be faithful. If we use medieval poetry as a reliable source, we discover that the use of chastity belts was often in consensus between both parties. Real chastity belts became available later, and the majority of chastity belts were bought in the 19th Century, in England, by women. The chair of torture, also known as the witch’s chair, the chair of spikes, the interrogation chair – a commonly used torture device from the Middle Ages contained a lot of spikes or needles that would pierce the skin of the victim everywhere their skin touched the chair. There was no rest, for the wicked or anyone else who sat in this thing. The chair of torture dates back to the Middle Ages but may have been used till the late 19th Century. These implements were used in Germany up until the 19th century, in Italy and in Spain up until the end of the 1700s, in France and in other central European countries, according to certain sources, up until the end of 1800.

This instrument of torture comes in different versions. These chairs have different shapes and sizes, but they were all equipped with spines and immobilization of the victim. All of them have common characteristics, in that they are covered with spikes on the back, on the arm-rests, on the seat, on the leg-rests, and on the foot-rests. The chair itself contains up to 2000 metal spikes in addition to a means of fixing the victim into the chair, and applying pressure to force the person’s body, or appendages more firmly against the spikes. The bars, either made of iron or wood, fastened the victim around the waist, around the wrists, and around the chest or bust. It’s easy to comprehend the effect of the spikes piercing the victim’s body made even more effective by a screw bar system to immobilize the victim and make the pins penetrate more deeply. The seat was often made of iron that could be heated. Some spiked seat had holes to allow the victim’s bottom to be ‘heated’ by hot coals placed under the seat, causing painful burns, but still keeping the victim conscious.

The victim, always naked, was strapped within the chair using tight leather straps. The initial pain of hundreds of sharp rusty spikes penetrating the flesh could always be increased by the torturer forcibly pressing the prisoner down or back against the spikes. Variations (without spikes) were used to bind the victim so that the torturer could easily baste his or her feet with lard or oil heated by nearby braziers. The victim’s wrists were strapped in to prevent movement, while bars and other movable parts pressed against the limbs ensuring the tips penetrated the flesh deeper.

While quite painful, the chair itself was not always immediately fatal. A quick death was far from guaranteed. The purpose was to perforate the flesh with a great deal of pain but without immediately damaging critical organs. No vital organs were pierced and the pressure of the spikes themselves plugged wounds, slowing blood loss and often keeping victims alive for a day or more. The victim would be alive until his blood slowly drained out of his body. If the victim has been released, an infection and tetanus killed her in a week or two after their ordeal.

But the strength of this instrument lies mainly in the psychological terror it causes and the threat that the torture will get increasingly worse, conforming to a model where the pain starts off easy and then gets progressively worse. The idea is that the Inquisitors can interrupt it at any stage, upon visual inspection of the damages that have been inflicted. The psychological fear these torture devices aroused was often enough to extract a confession, and victims were frequently forced to watch others subjected to the treatment and witness the pain they too could soon be facing. There are records of people committing suicide before actually being subject to this torture.

The ancestor of wooden pony – wooden horse is a sharply angled torture device a wide triangular wooden plank, set sharp end up, mounted on a saw-horse like support. The victim is forced to “ride the horse” putting full body weight on the genitals. The helpless victim is lifted into the air and set upon the horse, his full body weight supported on the most tender flesh – his genitals, which rested on the point of the angle. Additional weights or restraints were often attached to the ankles to keep the victim from falling off. His legs are forced wide by the width of the lower part of the plank. Used on both men and women.

The traditional wooden horse torture originated in Japan during the Edo period (as many japanese texts and books say), where it was used as a punishment for christian missionaries or japanese christians and for peasants who cheated paying taxes. The first appearance of wooden horse in the historical text was in the Muromachi period (1336-1573) when it was used for torturing spies and enemies, or punish japanese clan members. A punishment similar to this was used during the American colonial period and later. Called Riding the rail the victim was often carried through town in this predicament, often in conjunction with the punishment of tarring and feathering. The crotch can be injured and the victim unable to walk without pain. The rail was also used in Europe as a general-purpose torture.

A similar device – the Spanish donkey was used in Europe both for torture and execution. The donkey was a big hit in the Spanish military. A naked victim was forced to straddle the apparatus, which was basically a vertical wood board with a sharp V-shape wedge on top. Weights were attached to the offenders’ ankles or feet, pulling them down onto the sturdy wedge until the victims split in two.

But Catholic Guilt uses a kinder, gentler wooden horse, which he affectionately calls a “wooden pony”. The wooden pony is a less immediately painful variation. It is a single plank of wood supported (either again with wooden legs or suspended from the ceiling) horizontal from the floor on its side, with the thin edge up. Usually this edge is filed to a blunt point or rounded off. The victim is made to straddle the plank, which is adjusted (raised or lowered) in order to make the victim stand on his tiptoes or rest his body weight on his genitals on the plank to protect his tender flesh.

This less intense variation was subsequently developed for and more commonly used in BDSM play. The wooden pony has recently become popular with BDSM connoisseurs. Some experts even find that the wooden pony motivates a slave much more effectively than a flogging will. So the wooden pony now is a BDSM device, designed for the slow sexual torture of a beautiful woman.

There are a lot of ingenious wooden pony modifications made to the original concept of the old “wooden horse”: electric pony, spiked bars with impaling dildos, fixed planks, body-contorting devices, tightly strung ropes etc. But the main rule is that the pain is inflicted by the subject’s own weight. Slavegirl is tied loosely but well enough that she can not dismount. She waits, helpless, as the inevitable muscle fatigue slowly sets in. After many long minutes her calves finally tire. Girl uses the last of her strength to lower herself as gently as possible to the hard, narrow surface of the pony. As slave’s flesh swells comfort is impossible and she squirms constantly. It is this constant motion that gives “riding the wooden pony” its name.

Remember that the board is very uncomfortable in girl’s crotch. Her hands are suspended above her, usually through a pulley system. The pear of anguish – also known as poire d’angoisser, the spanish mouth pear, the pope’s pears, the choke pear, the anal pear and oral pear – was an iron torture instrument shaped like a pear, which was inserted in the victim’s mouth, anus or vagina. It was used to rupture the sensitive membranes and tissues of these areas. Because it damaged the body only inside body cavities, it was sometimes used to extract “confessions” when there was a need to pass them off as freely given. Used during Medieval Times, the pear of anguish was an extremely painful device used to punish homosexuals, witches and women accused of inducing a miscarriage. The insertion of the pear depended on the crime the victim was accused of, while slanderers and blasphemers would have their mouths mutilated, homosexuals would suffer the same fate on their anus, and women who had induced a miscarriage, or been accused of witchcraft and carnal knowledge of demons would see their vaginas torn apart by it.

Mutilation of breasts and female genitalia has been an omnipresent and constant usage throughout history. Insomuch as the soul of torture is male, male organs have always enjoyed the benefit of a species of immunity notwithstanding certain exceptions, a fact that leads to the hypothesis of a fraternal understanding between male victim and male judge-torturer, an understanding that must have been welded into the nascent primordial mind eons ago. And since the soul of torture is male, and in the tenebrosity of his unilluminable nature the male is terrified by the mysteries of the female’s cycles and fecundity, but above all by her inherent intellectual, emotional and sexual superiority, those organs that define her essence have forever been subjected to his most savage ferocity, he being superior only in physical strength. Hence centuries of witch hunts, with torture methods.

Fundamentalist ignorance and superstition reached a peak in the 1600’s, instigated by the church, who taught that the Devil was everywhere, and that any undesirable manifestation was the result of witchcraft and devils. Torture was the other form of bringing the convicted closer to God by accepting his sins, and this increased during the Spanish Inquisition. The accused were imprisoned without hearing the charges against them, and kept in stinking dungeons. Once convicted the prisoner was to be shown the instruments of torture and urged to confess in front of the inquisitor and the bishop. It was during this period that such torture device as the pear of anguish became very common.

But despite modern speculation that the device might have been used by the Spanish Inquisition, there is no historical context for the claims. There is no contemporary first-hand account of those devices or their use. The earliest mention is in F. de Calvi’s L’Inventaire general de l’histoire des larrons (“General inventary of the history of thieves”), written in 1639. This mention is referring specifically to the use of the choke-pear in the mouth by robbers. Further mentions of the device appear in the 19th century. The 1811 Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable refers to ‘choke-pear’ as being a tool formerly used in Holland. They were also discussed in a book by Eldridge and Watts, superintendent of police and chief inspector of the detective bureau in Boston, Massachusetts (1897). A vaginal pear appears in Ken Russell’s 1971 film The Devils, where a few implements similar to the vaginal pear are used on an accused witch.

The pear of anguish is a hideously cruel device. As its name suggests, it’s a pear-shaped unit. It has four, two or three segments which opened and closed at the turn of a screw at the top, like a flower opening its petals. A screw inserted between the leaves could be turned to slowly separate the four lobes of the ‘pear’, expanding the orifice into which it had been inserted. Often, the ends of the pear’s segments were fitted with sharp tines. The pronged ends of each lobe ensured maximum damage as they tore into the throat, cervix or rupturing other tissues. The pointed prongs at the end of the segments serve better to rip into the throat, the intestines or the cervix.

This torture very rarely provoked death, but was often followed by other torture methods. It was the torturer’s decision to simply tear the skin or expand the “pear” to its maximum and mutilate the victim. This torture has in itself the implicit idea of inflicting punishment that was opposite to the kind of crime one had been charged with. Causing severe pain, after torture was employed on the mouth, the victim’s teeth would get destroyed, making blood pour out of the victim’s mouth often causing death. If introduced in the anus or vagina, death was a step away. When applied vaginally, the spikes wreaked havoc on the woman’s cervix.

The pear of anguish was rarely washed, thus causing infections very frequently. If the victim didn’t die by an infection however, he would die by other diseases caused by the severe damage of his or her intestines.

Several European towns have “torture museums” where the pear of anguish is put on display. These devices were much more intricately decorated than many other tools of the trade, bordering on works of art. For instance, the pear of anguish from Venice (late 1500’s) consists of bronze segments and key, iron screw. The face of Satan was etched on the screw. It is doubtful, however, that the embellishments made much difference to anyone who experienced the torture of the pear of anguish.

Although the original pear was a destructive torture device, there are fictional accounts of similar devices being used for erotic purposes. The pear of anguish was used and still are in some BDSM play. It is no longer ornamented but otherwise not much changed.

There are several different types of needles that can be used for piercing such as hypodermic, accupuncture or needles for suturing. All needles designed to pierce the skin are not tapered to a point like sewing needles but instead are cylinders cut off at an angle at one end to provide a cutting edge: examples include the old fashioned piercers’ needles, ‘Medicut’ canula needles and hypodermic needles intended for injections and blood sampling. Piercers’ needles and medicuts are much better suited to permanent piercing. Hypodermic needles are by far the favoured choice of play piercers: they are thin, relatively cheap, sterile, disposable, and have a plastic fitting on one end designed to attach to a syringe but ideal as a handle and to prevent them being pushed right through the piercing.

Obtaining them can take some research and footwork: though they are legal to buy openly in many territories, and despite the health problems of drug users having to share needles, some pharmacists are still unwilling to supply them to just anyone. Good sources are the large pharmacies that supply to the private medical profession.

Hypodermic needles

The most commonly used are hypodermic needles (the kind used for injections and blood sampling). The hypodermic needle is a hollow needle commonly used with a syringe to inject substances into the body or extract liquids from the body. They may also be used to take liquid samples from the body, for example taking blood from a vein in venipuncture. Hypodermic needles are normally made from a stainless-steel tube drawn through progressively smaller dies to make the needle. The end is bevelled to create a sharp pointed tip. This lets the needle easily penetrate the skin.

Hypodermic needles are by far the favoured choice of play piercers: they are thin, relatively cheap, sterile, disposable, and have a plastic fitting on one end designed to attach to a syringe but ideal as a handle and to prevent them being pushed right through the piercing.

Most hypodermic needles can be bought at any medical supplier or pharmacy, however some pharmacies will not sell them without a prescription that requires them so you may need to hunt around a little bit. Most medical supply shops and drug stores will sell sharps containers, and will tell you where they should be disposed of. Some states allow one to purchase needles without a prescription.

The hypodermic needle should travel just underneath the surface of ordinary skin, to emerge through the skin a short distance from where it was inserted. The needle tips have a bevel. With regard to the skin being pierced, the bevel may be up or down (it’s personal preference); having the bevel sideways makes no sense, however. Shallower = More Pain, Larger Diameter Needle = More Pain.

The diameter of the needle is indicated by the needle gauge. The smaller the gauge, the larger the needle diameter. And there are a number of systems for gauging needles, including the Stubs Needle Gauge, and the French Catheter Scale. Twenty-one-gauge needles are most commonly used for drawing blood for testing purposes, and sixteen- or seventeen-gauge needles are most commonly used for blood donation. Larger-gauge needles (with smaller diameter) will rupture the red blood cells, and if this occurs, the blood is useless for the patient receiving it.

Needles in common medical use range from 7 gauge (the largest) to 33 (the smallest) on the Stubs scale. Common needle guages for play piercing are 26 through 18. Different gauges of needles have different color hubs, but these colors are not consistent across brands. On the needle package, the needles are commonly identified first by gauge, and second by needle length (in inches). Thus, a package labelled “22 1 1/2″ would contain 22 gauge needles with a length of 1 1/2 inches. Each gauge is normally available in lengths of 15mm/0.5″, 25mm/1″, 40mm/1.5″ and 50mm/2″. The commonest gauges are shown in the table below.

The thinner the gauge, the less intense the sensation. Gauge 30 needles are almost impossible to feel in certain places, for example. Very sensitive areas require thinner needles such as 25 and 27; for general purposes gauge 21s are ideal, and for an intense sensation 19s can be used in all but the most sensitive areas.

Different lengths suit different purposes. In general, play piercings go right through the body, so 15mm needles are usually too short to be useful. 40mm is a good general purpose length, and 50mm affords the possibility of threading the needle through surface skin more than once.

Accupuncture needles

Accupuncture needles used in procedure of inserting and manipulating filiform needles into various points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes. Most modern acupuncturists use disposable stainless steel needles of fine diameter (0.007 to 0.020 in (0.18 to 0.51 mm)), sterilized with ethylene oxide or by autoclave. These needles are far smaller in diameter (and therefore less painful) than hypodermic injection needles since they do not have to be hollow for purposes of injection. The upper third of these needles is wound with a thicker wire (typically bronze), or covered in plastic, to stiffen the needle and provide a handle for the acupuncturist to grasp while inserting.

If you thought BDSM acupuncture was medicine for aches and pains then you have never tried it correctly. Needle torture is never painless and it isn’t intended to be relieving. In the hands of a skilled sadist pain is a sweet dish served at the point of sharp needle. The best plases for acupuncture needles are places with soft skin like nipples, pussy labias and especially clitoris.

Needles for sewing

Ordinary sewing needles are not ideal: they have to be sterilised first and may not be sharp enough to go through the body with ease. Furthermore almost all the widely available ones are made of cheap chromium plated metal, and these should never be used, since the plating could come off in the piercing and give all sorts of infection problems. Solid steel needles are difficult to come by, though they are sometimes available for marine use, where they are required to be rust resistant. Pointed needles also hurt a lot more — the tapered shape means that the skin is forced further apart after the initial penetration.

For suturing (sewing) the skin, hypodermics are clearly unsuitable, and if solid steel sewing needles are unobtainable or undesirable the alternative is to use surgical sutures from medical suppliers. These are small curved needles looking rather like toenail clippings, supplied in sterile packs already attached to a length of sterile nylon or silk thread. Unfortunately they cannot be handled successfully or safely by hand and must be used with forceps. Nylon is stronger but more difficult to knot; larger sized needles of at least 26mm (1″) length are preferred for most play purposes.

There are several shapes of surgical needles, including:

- straight

- half curved or ski

- 1/4 circle

- 3/8 circle

- 1/2 circle

- 5/8 circle

- compound curve

Needles may also be classified by their point geometry; examples include:

- taper (needle body is round and tapers smoothly to a point)

- cutting (needle body is triangular and has a sharpened cutting edge on the inside)

- reverse cutting (cutting edge on the outside)

- trocar point or tapercut (needle body is round and tapered, but ends in a small triangular cutting point)

- blunt points for sewing friable tissues

- side cutting or spatula points (flat on top and bottom with a cutting edge along the front to one side) for eye surgery

The iron maiden tortures the body with sharp objects such as knives, spikes or nails. These spikes impaled the victim in the eyes, the chest and the back, different parts of the body, but usually missed vital organs, so as to leave the victim bleeding profusely and in great pain, but still alive for a period of time. The person inside was forced to remain standing in one position, ultimately causing their demise. The victim is weakened slowly and dies of a combination of shock and blood loss, if not asphyxiation. Most victims ended up dying as a result of the torture as a liberal amount of blood often gushed out of their bodies after some time. However, this technique was not used primarily for executions. It is entirely possible that a subject would call out after having spent some time within the iron maiden for relief. This torture device combines physical pain and psychological trauma – all alone in a small space with sharp spikes threatening to kill you from every side.

A very similar torture device was constructed by Countess Elizabeth Bathory in the 16th century, which she allegedly dubbed, the iron virgin. The iron maiden is often associated with the Middle Ages, but in fact was not invented until the late 18th century. No account of the iron maiden can be found earlier than 1793. The most famous, and probably the first, device was The iron maiden of Nuremberg. The idea of mechanized torture was born in Germany and its seams that the Nuremberg Maiden was the first. Historians have ascertained that Johann Philipp Siebenkees created the history of it as a hoax in 1793. According to Siebenkees’ colportage, it was first used on August 14, 1515, to execute a coin forger. The Nuremberg iron maiden was actually built in the late 18th century as a probable misinterpretation of a medieval “Schandmantel” (“cloak of shame”), which was made of wood and tin but without spikes. Accounts of the iron maiden cannot be found from any period older than 1793, although most other medieval torture devices were extensively catalogued.

The Nuremberg iron maiden got its name because of the external similarities with the Bavarian woman, but also because first prototype was created and used in a secret dungeon at Nuremberg. The Nuremberg maiden was anthropomorphic and probably styled after Mary, the mother of Jesus, with a carved likeness of her on the face. It had a ladies face carved on its front door. The iron maiden could be a detailed hollow sculpture of a woman but as well a plain box lined with spikes.

It stands 7 feet tall (2.1 m) and 3 feet (0.91 m) wide. It can accommodate a large man. It had double doors. The device would be opened both from the front and from the back side without the victim being able to get out. The doors of the maiden could be opened and closed one at a time, without giving the victim opportunity to escape. Supposedly, this was helpful when checking on the victim. The doors of the maiden were shut slowly, so that the very sharp points penetrated a mans arms, and his legs in several places, along with his belly and chest, bladder, eyes, shoulders, and his buttocks, but not enough to kill him.

The container was so thick that no shriek could be heard from outside unless the doors were opened. When the “virgin” doors were shut back, the spikes penetrated the same parts of the body and into the same wounds as before, inflicting a long and cruel agony. Mobility was nearly impossible, and if the victim was weakened by the ordeal, the piercing objects would remain in place and tear into the body even further, causing even more intense pain. The condemned person was kept in an extremely confined space to maximize his level of suffering by claustrophobia. When completely closed, the screams from the victim could not be heard outside, nor could the victim see light or hear anything.

Inside the iron maiden was fitted with dozens (thirteen in total) of sharp spikes, including one fitted perfectly to each eye. Allegedly, the spi-kes were sometimes heated red hot as well to increase pain, or possibly cauterize the puncture wounds as to prolong suffering. Supposedly, they were designed so that when the doors were shut, the spikes skewered the subject, but missed vital organs, permitting him to remain alive and upright.

Historical experts have theorized that the spikes on the inside of the doors may have been moveable in order to accommodate each victim. They were thought to have been able to be repositioned and/or relocated depending on the individual requirements of the person’s body and their crime. The overall result would be more or less lethal and mutilating depending upon where the spikes were located.

The head of the maiden might have a separate hinged door, with a wicked iron spike to pierce the victim’s face. It would have a small opening, which was closeable, so the interrogator would be able to open and close it at their will. In some designs, the maiden wrapped her arms around the victim. Torturers prolonged the agony by opening and closing the hinged doors, slowly allowing the spikes to pierce the flesh of the prisoner over and over again. Some designs featured a trapdoor, to drop the expired victim onto a rack of knives. Others had a tube in the bottom that made the victim see his own blood as it poured out of his body. The few people that did make it to this device, lasted more than 2 days before death finally struck them.

Purportedly, the condemned prisoner had to pass through seven rooms with seven doors before his scheduled execution. At the end of a long corridor he found himself looking into the face of an iron wardrobe that vaguely resembled a female form. Although on the outside the maiden appeared harmless and non-threatening, the doors were then opened to reveal spikes of iron on the inside that would torture the victim slowly rather than kill. The point of this deadly object was to impale the victim and inflict extreme pain and punishment – and also, like most instruments of torture, to intimidate the prisoner before actual use, so that he confessed.

The number of Iron Maidens ever built, let alone used in judicial proceedings or executions, is much in doubt. Replicas have been made, even if never used for the macabre purpose.

The iron maiden at Nuremberg Castle was destroyed in the air raids of 1944 near Nuremberg, Germany.

An iron maiden was found in Iraq near the building housing the Iraqi Football Association in which Uday Hussein had an office. In 2003, Time magazine reported that they had discovered an iron maiden, showing signs of use, in the administrative compound of the Iraqi national Olympic committee in central Baghdad, which they linked to reports of torture carried out upon Iraqi athletes by the committee’s head, Uday Hussein.

In 2006, investigators found a skeleton locked inside an iron maiden in Nuremberg. They found that the spikes were indeed placed in a fashion that they would not be fatal, but could drag on the death.

Several nineteenth century iron maidens are on display in museums around the world, but it is unlikely that they were ever employed. The iron maiden probably was not used until the twentieth century.

You will need about 9-10″ of leather for each cuff, about 2″ wide. If you are making them for a female sub, you can make them shorter. What you actually need, is the wrist measurement, plus about 3″ If you are going to line them, you might want to add another inch.

You will also need the two part rivets, the hasp (?) part of a lock set (what I mean is the part with the ring sticking up that you pull the other piece over then padlock.)

Use rather heavy leather for this, otherwise, the hasp is going to unbalance them and they will be uncomfortable. All you have to do, is set the padlock down on one end, measure where the holes are, punch the holes, and fasten the padlock down with rivets.

Do this on each cuff. Then, measure them on your sub, and cut a slit for the hasp to come through, and fasten them with padlocks.

Voila! Locking cuffs, custom sized.

You can also add a D ring, anywhere you like by simply using a small piece of leather as a strap to hold it on……and riveting it down on either side of the d ring. These rivets are pretty secure.

We usually use rabbit fur scraps to line mine with, and we use leather that is a bit heavier than your usual belt leather. So far, we haven’t seen it stretch much.
