Mummification is a specialized form of bondage and sensory deprivation which involves wrapping the subject in some material or combination of materials. Mummification can be either quite severe or relatively gentle and comfortable, depending on the materials and techniques used. Regardless of severity, it tends to be one of the more involved “scenes,” as a full body wrap takes quite a long time to accomplish. But for those who enjoy it, it’s definitely worth the time and effort! Most people associate mummification with full body wraps, but the same techniques can be used on isolated body parts. For example, an electrical tape “head wrap” serves as an interesting and potentially severe hood, while arm or leg wraps can quickly immobilize a submissive.

The general idea is simple: you’re going to make a mummy, rather like what you remember from those old black-and-white horror movies. This is done by wrapping material around the submissive’s body. How you go about it will depend on your goals. For a gentle, comfortable wrap, you could use elastic bandages. If you want this to be more about bondage and helplessness, use duct tape over pallet wrap, wrapping the legs together and the arms against the body. For sensory deprivation, wrap each limb separately before doing an over-wrap… and you might consider inserting foam ear plugs before you wrap the head and cut off the mummy’s eyesight.

Some materials are fairly common in mummification, and they can be broken down into a few broad classes:

Plastic

Plastic is excellent for mummification, because it’s relatively easy to work with and tends to stick to itself. Since it doesn’t stick to skin (much), it can be used directly on the body, and is often the first layer of a more intense wrap. The down side is that it doesn’t “breath,” so it’s not the most comfortable material for the person being wrapped. (On the other hand, some folks love that damp sweaty sensation!)

Kitchen Plastic Wrap – Known as “cling film” in the UK, different brands have different characteristics. Saran WrapTM, for example, is fairly thick and won’t stretch far before it breaks, but it sticks to itself tenaciously. Dow Handi-WrapTM, on the other hand, is thinner and stretches more. Plastic wrap is now available in colors, and you can do some interesting “decorative” wraps by overlaying different colors.

Pallet Wrap – Also known as “banding fim” in the narrower sizes, this is a usually heavier gauge, stretchy plastic that is used to wrap boxes to shipping pallets (among other uses). It’s available in narrow rolls that are easier to use around the curves and angles of the body, as well as wide rolls for quick over-wrapping. Pallet wrap is available in colors including black, but most mail-order sources want you to buy a case at a time. Narrow rolls of green and clear are usually available at hardware stores and U-Haul locations.

Shrink Wrap – Not to be confused with pallet wrap, shrink wrap doesn’t stretch much, if any. After it’s applied, heat is applied (with a blow drier, for example) and the film shrinks, clinching whatever (or whoever!) is underneath.

Tape

Tape has an adhesive backing of course, so it stays where you put it… good for mummification. Since tape also adheres to skin and hair, you’ll generally use tape as an overwrap, with something a bit less aggressive underneath. Most tapes don’t “breath” so, again, this isn’t the most comfortable wrap.

Duct Tape – The staple of mummification fans! Many, many wraps are done with duct tape over pallet wrap. It’s wide (so you get a lot done with each pass), it’s relatively attractive (standard gray duct tape makes a sort of shiny silver mummy, and it’s available in colors as well), it’s inexpensive, and it’s readily available at any hardware store. Duct tape doesn’t stretch, so you have to take some
care in applying it.

Electrical Tape – Made of vinyl, electrical tape (or upholstery repair tape) stretches to some degree and is available in bright colors. Some of the more expensive brands have an adhesive that’s well-behaved enough to use directly on the skin. Because the tape is narrow, it’s excellent for oddly shaped areas like the head, or where there are a lot of curves, like around the fingers.

Aisle Marking Tape – Not flexible and workable like duct tape, and not stretchy and narrow like electrical tape, aisle marking tape has one redeeming characteristic: it comes in stripes! Diagonal stripes of black and yellow, black and white, or red and white are used to mark off various industrial hazard areas. If you want a “Christmas candy cane” mummy, you’ll have to painstakingly apply spirals of red and white duct tape. Aisle marking tape, though, can give you the color scheme and the general “feel” of that… or of a bumblebee!

As long as we’re talking about this sort of thing, don’t overlook “message tape,” which is typically used to seal cartons. It doesn’t stretch and is difficult to work with… but think how appropriate it would be to wrap your mummy with tape that says FRAGILE – Handle with Care!

Packing Tape – Plastic packing tape doesn’t stretch and is very thin and tenacious… plus it tends to tear. It’s difficult to work with and isn’t very “pretty,” but it will do in a pinch. It’s available in a number of colors including light tan and absolutely crystal clear.

Metal Duct Seam Tape – This is literally a strip of thin metal with an adhesive backing. It wrinkles badly and, once wrinkled, you can’t smooth it out again. But it makes a nice accent if you’re doing “artistic” mummification!

Bandages

Bandages can be used directly on the skin and, for the most part, aren’t sticky (VetrapTM is a wonderful exception). Since bandages “breath,” the submissive will find these more comfortable than some other materials. You can even wrap the head completely, since air will pass through the bandage. Unless you use multiple layers, bandages allow a lot of freedom of movement for the mummy, which again means more comfort. Plus, bandages can be used over and over again, reducing the costs of mummification. The down side is that it’s tougher to keep the wrap in place as the bandages will tend to slip and slide (again, VetrapTM is an exception).

Gauze – This is probably as close as you can get to the classic “horror film mummy” look! Gauze doesn’t stretch much at all, but if you want an effect of “The Mummy Walks” for Halloween, this is a great way to go. Since gauze is very absorbent, it’s a useful base layer for encasement scenes (a relative of mummification) with, for example, hot wax or plaster of paris.

Elastic Bandages – Ace is probably the best-known brand. The simplest elastic bandage is just a strip of stretchy cloth. Some varieties have a bit of “tack” to their ends and will stick to itself; these are a bit easier to use. Elastic bandages usually come in a rough approximation of flesh tone.

VetrapTM – A wonderful product from 3M that comes in gorgeous colors like hot pink, purple, red, black… you name it, they probably make it. This material looks and feels more like crepe paper than anything else. It clings to itself marvelously, but doesn’t stick to other materials. It comes in narrow rolls and is excellent for wrapping the head or anywhere there are a lot of tight curves. It’s available from veterinary supply stores and often at tack shops.

Pre-WrapTM – This is a very thin, velvety-soft foam that is used in athletics under other wraps. It tends to cling to itself but doesn’t really “stick”. It can give an interesting milky, “filmy” look, but isn’t quite as comfortable as fabric.

SpandexTM – Nothing stretches like LycraTM. It breaths, and is available in fluorescent colors. The down side is that Lycra is fairly expensive, and it’s very “slippery,” so expect problems keeping the wrapping in place.

Cloth Strips – While cloth (like SpandexTM, mentioned above) isn’t the easiest thing to work with, it does open you up to a wide range of colors, patterns, and textures. If you have an old, worn bed sheet that’s about to head for the rag bag, try tearing it into strips and experimenting with it. If you want to try this variant, save it for a nice warm environment to reduce the risks from the chill of evaporation.

An aesthetic is achieved that is dark, organic, and fractal, it is a twisting and arching in skeletal form, and each serves the sadistic function to restrain and torture the human body.

“I approach art with an almost sexual passion, and I strive to complete each piece with the specter of death hovering over my shoulder. Creating my sculptures initially involves finding a particularly appealing shape in the branches of a tree and then deciding on how best it may be suited to bind a girl to. From that point I allow a sort of ecstatic frenzy to overtake me as I carve the wood and embellish upon its initial form.
The first in the series of primitive torture devices is the “Nihilophiliac Cuddlebunny”. Essentially it functions as a sling, though there are multiple eye bolts so that it will accommodate 3 girls at once. It was cut from an 80 year old maple in my backyard. The majority of the carving was done with a chainsaw before I brought it inside, enclosed it in plastic tarps and finished the fine carving, staining and burning. Not the safest thing to do with dry wood in a house. It was completed in late 2009 and has been seen at a number of art and fetish shows, including the Dirty Show and it will be on display again with many of my other pieces at the upcoming OrganGrinders ball in Cleveland this April.

The “Trans-teleological Tuggybear” was finished in early October of 2010 and consists of the same maple as the “Nihilophiliac Cuddlebunny”. It has an antique winch mounted to it which raises and lowers the wrist restraints. Other than that it functions basically like a St. Andrew’s cross. And that’s the thing with my work, I wanted to make bondage equipment that didn’t really look like anything that’s been seen before. Each piece is unique and I try to allow the form of the wood and that frenzied state to lead me along until the visions of these devices are realized. I am obsessed with their creation.

The “Anti-anthropocentricism Biteyboo” serves the function of a table, but the table top is on a hinge revealing stocks to hold the wrists tight. I like to put a girl on it and then set a full glass of wine before her. The game is every time her movements spill the wine she gets another lash, which in turn spills more wine, and another lash and so forth. It’s great fun!”

Male chastity belt (or male chastity cage, or penis prison, or chastity tubes) is a device which encloses the male genitals to prevent stimulation and erection. Chastity tubes or cages, or even piercings, are stimulation prevention devices for males – these popular devices are commonly referred to as “chastity belts”. Ironically, modern male chastity devices are almost exclusively used as a sex aid and in BDSM play. Since most chastity devices effectively prevent masturbation, it means one partner gives the other control of all orgasms. This can be a great deal of fun for both people. A female partner locks her man’s penis into one of these devices. She takes the key to work and leaves it there. The very fact that she now controls when he can enjoy sexual release is a turn-on. Over a fairly short time, most men will be very anxious to get unlocked long enough for a chance to come.

The period from 1850 to 1930 is full of truly strange sexual history. For example, in the 1850′s it became a widely held belief that male masturbation caused insanity. This triggered nearly a hundred years of increasingly demonic inventions designed to prevent young men from playing with themselves or having wet dreams. Male inmates in asylums were routinely fitted with devices to prevent them from making their conditions worse through ejaculation. There are several different options when it comes to male chastity – tubes, cages and piercings. Belts, like their female counterparts consist of a tamper-proof cover for the penis, attached to a belt that can’t be removed. Tubes are what they sound like, tubes into which the penis is inserted. They are narrow so that erection is not possible inside them. They are attached to the body in various ways.

Chastity tubes offer the advantage of not requiring a waist band to work. They fall into two major groups: metal and plastic. Heavy stainless steel is less comfortable than lightweight plastic. Chastity tubes operate on two basic theories: that a narrow tube will prevent the penis from getting thicker, and therefore erect, or they prevent the penis from getting longer, thus not allowing erection. Some also incorporate the concept of making the penis itself unavailable for touching. Another subdivision in the tube department is how the tubes are secured to the penis. Some are attached by locking a tight ring around the scrotum.

Steel chastity tubes are an entirely different matter. They wrap along the length of his penis, only allowing his little pee hole freedom at the tip. There is no way for him to stimulate his penis at all as long as he is locked up in the tube. The downside to the steel male chastity tube is that once a week or so, you will have to unlock him and wash his penis yourself so as to prevent him from getting infected.

Most chastity cages have two parts: a ring seated around the base of the penis behind the scrotum and a capped cage, into which the flaccid penis is inserted. The cage is perforated to allow fluids to drain easily. Some designs have a curved or angled cage to make erections uncomfortable. The two parts mate together on hinges or pins and are held fast with a padlock, holding the testicles in a gap close enough to prevent the penis from being pulled out.

Some steel male chastity cages are shaped like wire baskets and lock around the penis and testicles. The advantage of a male steel chastity cage is that the space between the wires allows him to wash his private parts in the shower while remaining locked up. The downside to a male steel chastity cage is that it does allow some sexual stimulation. Simply by running water over the cage in the shower, he will get sexual pleasure. And if your partner is a premature ejaculator, he might be able to have a no-erection orgasm.

A chastity cage must be properly sized, fitted and adjusted in order to be secure and not damage the genitals. Ring size and spacing are the two most important adjustments that can be made. Probably the most widely used instrument of torture, the rack is to date back to the ancient Greeks. The basic idea of the rack may have originated in the Greek legend of the giant bandit Procrustes. It was rumored that he possessed a bed made of iron that was the right size for any guest. After luring unwary travelers to sleep on the iron bed, he would stretch them to fit – tall travelers had their legs or head lopped off and fed to a giant tortoise. The rack was used since antiquity, being used on St. Vincent and mentioned by the Church Fathers Tertullian (on extraction of confessions from criminals and on persisting Christian “sacrilegers” against the state religion) and St. Jerome (used on a woman according to his first letter).

There are few records of its use before the Middle Ages but during the Spanish Inquisition from the middle of the 13th century onwards there was an increase in its use. The Medieval period of the Middle Ages was violent, and blood thirsty. In these barbarous times the cruel and pitiless torturers were induced to inflict the horrors of tortures, including the Rack, on prisoners by Stretching and Dislocation. Torture methods, devices and instruments were used to inflict the deliberate, systematic, cruel and wanton infliction of physical and mental suffering. There were no laws or rules to protect the treatment of prisoners who faced torture, such as the Rack by Stretching and Dislocation. Torture was seen as a totally legitimate means for justice to extract confessions, obtain the names of accomplices, obtain testimonies or confessions.

At the Tower of London the rack was sometimes claimed as the invention of the Duke of Exeter, a 15th-century Constable of the Tower and so in the 16th-century it was nicknamed The Duke of Exeter’s Daughter although other sources called it “the brake”. During the religious ferment that gripped England in the 16th-century, the rack was used freely not only by the Catholic Queen Mary, but by those monarchs who had broken with Rome – Henry VIII, Edward VI and Elizabeth I.

A famous victim of the rack was Anne Askew who was one of the women stretched on the Rack due to her religious beliefs. Anne Askew ((1521-1546) was an English writer and Protestant who was persecuted as a heretic. Anne Askew distributed books about the Protestant faith which had been banned by the authorities. Anne Askew was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. It was believed that Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry VIII, was a heretic who shared the Protestant views of Anne Askew. Torture was ordered as a way to obtain names of other heretics and to get Anne Askew to implicate the Queen. Sir William Kingston was the Constable of the Tower of London. He was a man hardened by the sights he had witnessed in the Tower but even he refused to see women stretched on the rack. Thomas Wriothesley and Richard Rich took over the role of chief torturers and Anne Askew had to face the ordeal of the rack again. Anne Askew refused to implicate anyone else and was sentence to death by being Burned at the Stake. Brave Anne Askew was carried to execution in a chair because she could not walk after her torture of being stretched on the rack. A chair was tied to the stake and she was burnt alive at the tender age of just 25 years old. Anne Askwe will always be remembered as one of the women stretched on the rack.

Under Queen Elizabeth I, one of the chief interrogators was Thomas Norton. On 27 March 1582 he wrote to the man credited with creating the English secret service, Sir Francis Walsingham: “None was put to the rack that was not at first by some manifest evidence known to the Council to be guilty of treason, so that it was well assured beforehand that there was no innocent tormented. Also none was tormented to know whether he was guilty or not, but for the Queen’s safety to know the manner of the treason and the accomplices.”

Although many variations of the rack have been used throughout the centuries, the basic principle has always been the same – to stretch the victim’s body. The rack stood about one metre from the ground. It was a machine consisting of a rectangular wooden frame. The wooden frame had a roller at each end. The victim’s feet were manacled to one roller, and the wrists were manacled to the other. A handle and ratchet were attached to the top roller and were turned very gradually stepwise to increase the tension on the chains. The victim was tied across a board by his ankles and wrists. The rollers at either end of the board were turned, pulling the body in opposite directions. The victims body was initially stretched. Limbs would be dislocated and prolonged use would end with limbs being torn from their sockets inducing excruciating pain. This caused terrible pain for the victim as well as increasing physical damage as the torture continued. Tendons were ripped, joints separated and bones fractured. The sounds of muscles and tendons tearing and snapping provided audible signs of the damage being done. A victim of the rack was often left with permanent physical disability. For example, because of injuries suffered after being racked three times the Jesuit priest Edmund Campion was unable to raise his hand to swear at his trial. Dislocated joints were the most common problem, but the most serious one was the breaking apart of the spine or spinal vertebrae.

When the victim was securely fastened on the rack, the questions to which answers were desired were put to him. Failure to reply satisfactorily was the signal for the two executioners to commence operating the levers. The result was the stretching of the victim’s limbs and body. If persisted in, this was bound to cause dislocation of the joints or to drag off the members. In some cases the limbs were stretched in much the same manner as on the rack but by means of ropes and pulleys attached to rings or staples in the walls. Occasionally the tortures of the rack were varied or increased by the use of cords in addition to the stretching mechanism. The arms and legs were bound to the sides of the rack with thin but strong cords. These cords were wound around each limb three times, and a stick was inserted in each. When all was ready for the torture to commence, the executioners twisted these sticks, thus gradually tightening the cords and causing them to cut into the flesh until the bones were reached, inflicting terrible wounds.

Sometime this method was limited to dislocating a few bones, but the torturer often went too far and rendered the legs or arms (sometimes both) useless. In the late Middle Ages, some new variants of this device appeared. They often had spikes that penetrated the victim’s back – as the limbs were pulled apart, so was his spinal cord increasing not only the physical pain, but the psychological one of being handicapped at best, too.

The spread-eagled posture left no part of the body invulnerable from the application of other devices like hot irons or pincers, (luckily by that point, the hot irons would be a cake walk) or immune from the attention of those gathered to observe the torture.

In theory there were rules about the use of torture. For example, people were not meant to be tortured to death or tortured repeatedly. People who were physically weak were not mean to be tortured because they might not survive the process. Attempts were made to start with “milder” tortures before moving on to the rack if all else failed.

This method was mostly used to extract confessions, as not confessing meant that the torturer could stretch more. Sometimes, torturers forced their victim to watch other people be tortured with this device to implant psychological fear. It was standard procedure to show the prisoner the rack first, and then to repeat the questions: only if the prisoner remained obstinate should the rack actually be used. Some people did stay silent and were then tortured.

During this time however, the slave will act as if this dominant is the rightful Master or Mistress and refer to them in all areas of service. The collar acts to openly declare to other dominant’s that this submissive is “off-limits” and that honourable dominant’s should not pursue this submissive in any manner. However, the slave retains to right to request a playtime with a specific person or reject it respectfully. This is a temporary collar that it is normally returned after the event has adjourned.

A collar of consideration can be by a bracelet, waist chain, anklet or other choice. The traditional or customary representation of the collar of consideration is a leather collar in some shade of blue. The actual shade of color is not as important as the color itself. This will usually be a very simple collar with no lock or key. No D-ring or one that is very small.

A Training Collar.

This collar represents the second collar exchanged between a Dominant and a submissive. Typically a prelude to a formal collar it is utilized while the sub/slave is being taught and is still learning the specific duties expected by her/his Dominant. In many cases the Dominant and submissive may consider or try living together actively.

The training collar is offered by the Dominant after they have engaged in a period of time where they have held extensive conversations with the submissive and explored characteristics, traits, interests, sexual needs, desires and lifestyles to see if they consider themselves to be a good match in enough areas to move into a relationship of deeper commitment. In many ways this is where the relationship is truly tested physically, mentally and emotionally.

The acceptance of this collar by the submissive indicates that the submissive agrees to pursue a much deeper relationship with the Dominant which will involve or may, serious feelings, emotions, commitments and responsibilities. Most enter a deeper emotional stage at this point and may begin to express true devotion, love, honour and mutual respect.

During this time period he/she is a mere submissive. Submissive is belonging to Dominant, is under training for a specific time frame or for duration. At this point of the journey, he/she is considered the submissive of the dominant, but no contract has been set up as of yet. Submissive could consider this the engagement time. Submissive courtship is over and he/she steady training has begun. Now actions carry consequences and more often or not this is the making or breaking period for many slaves and Dominants. This period of time can vary from couple to couple. It used to be a minimum of 2 years, but each hold their own stock on it. If after this time, the submissive has proven to be the right one and the Master or Mistress also, again yes it goes from both ends, then next stage can be an official Collaring Ceremony.

The traditional training collar is often made of leather. It is generally very plain and may be either red or black. Many Dominants alternatively offer a training collar in chain.

Formal or Slave Collar, or Permanent Collar.

Is given by the Dominant as a symbol of the bond between them. It represents love, honor, respect, and loyalty. This collar is usually presented during a ceremony in front of witnesses and is often accompanied by a permanent mark on the submissive/slave. It is a recognition of commitment, deep emotional feelings, devotion, mutual respect and consideration.

Joy of joys and privilege of privileges. This is the representation of the final stage of commitment. It expresses the belief that the dominant and submissive share a genuine and growing desire to share in each others lives, perhaps the rest of their lives. You are now the honored slave of your Dominant and are fully belonging to him or her. At this point a contract may be drawn up, not unlike a marriage license with both making their rights and responsibilities known to all in attendant. This is one of the most wonderful moments in a slave’s life. It is also a very special moment in the life of a Dominant. You now have achieved something most can only dream about. Usually this collar is presented in a 24/7 lifestyle setting and the slave if lucky is present in the household of the Master or Mistress.

The traditional appearance of the slave collar is a collar made of black leather or metal which is adorned by brass or silver objects or designs. This collar is created specifically for the individual submissive and is often an original design. You may see the addition of a lock and key. A lockable collar may further symbolize a transfer of power from the submissive to the dominant holding the key. Perhaps even a tag that may be attached to the D-ring.

An Ownership Collar.

In some extreme cases the slave isn’t enough. Slave wants to be owned, fully and completely. Slave wants to be the absolute property of the Master/Mistress wants to give the gift of complete life and soul. At this point the Contract is resigned, redone and finalized. You are now no longer your own person, but the property of another human being. This is not only the greatest of honors for a slave but for the Master or Mistress as well. Master or Mistress is Owner from now.
This is a very deep and emotional step, which has gone much further then any vanilla marriage ever could. This is like a marriage without the option of divorce. This will carry on into death.

House Collar.

House collars are used in clubs, homes and in organizations that provide social spaces to protect submissives. House collars show that the submissive is under the guidance of the house and is not to be approached. This is often used with inexperienced submissives who are not ready to make their own choices yet and need time to learn.

Cyber Collar.

These are virtual collars often virtually worn by people who have no idea of the real world. They live the life of a Dominant and slave in their imagination. The garrote, also known as garrote vil, garotte and garrotte – the execution device used by the Spaniards until the end of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship as recently as 1974. In Spain, it was abolished, as well as the death penalty, in 1978 with the new constitution. Originally, it was an execution where the convict was killed by hitting him with a club (“garrote” in Spanish). Later, it was refined and consisted of a seat to restrain the condemned person while the executioner tightened a metal band around his neck with a crank or a wheel until suffocation of the executee. With the handle the executioner slowly crushed the victim’s neck causing death from asphyxia.

The safe prototype of the garrote without movable parts is used now in BDSM play. This device is intended only to fix the submissive without causing an injury of the vital structures of the neck.

This device has a Spanish name because it was improved in Spain. It is not clear how complete earlier records are and even modern ones are somewhat patchy. But at least 736 people, including 16 women, were executed in Spain in the 19th century. 65 men and 2 women were executed by garroting between 1950 and 1974 in various parts of Spain. The first woman to be garroted was Juana Rivero in Madrid on the 3rd of November 1824 for robbery. Twenty seven year old Mariana Pineda became the first woman to suffer for treason when she was executed on the 26th of May 1831 in Andalusia. It was reported that the spike of the garrote pierced her neck and protruded through her mouth. Garroting was last used on the 2nd of March 1974, when two men were executed on the same day for the shooting of a police officer during a robbery.

A few other countries used the garrote now and again. It was used in Spanish colonies, e.g. Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. It also was the official method for ordinary criminals in Portugal up to abolition in 1867.

Garroting appears to have developed from the early Chinese form of execution known as the bow-string. The criminal was tied to an upright post with two holes bored in it through which the ends of a cord from a long bow were passed and pulled tight round the neck by the executioner until the condemned strangled. In later versions the prisoner was seated on a shorter post with his back to the main post and a rope loop was placed round his neck and around the post. The executioner twisted a stick inserted in the loop to tighten the rope and slowly strangle the prisoner.

There were many different types of garrotes used as execution devices. It was originally made of a pole driven in the ground and a rope to tie up round the victim’s neck. But if the pole was not very thick and the rope was tightened behind the pole, the neck of the victim could be tightened more gradually and easily released. The string tying the victim’s neck to the pole could be made of a material that would shrink once wetted, so that the victim would slowly suffocate as it dried. This sort of torture was used all over the world as testified by etchings.

The next form of garrote comprised a wooden stool on which the prisoner sat with his back to the post. A strong wooden chair was used and the condemned was strapped at the wrists, arms, waist and legs. In both types behind the seat, was a substantial post to which was affixed a heavy screw operated by a handle or a weighted lever, in both cases, connected to a spike or a small star shaped blade which ran through the post. When the screw/lever mechanism was operated, the blade entered the criminal’s neck and severed the spinal column, in an attempt to ensure that the prisoner did not strangle to death.

As in most countries, a more humane method of execution was sought and various improvements to the garrote were made. The Spanish version was perfected for this instrument to be used for execution. It had an iron collar that had an iron on its rear which penetrated the cervical vertebrae in a way that the convict died both for asphyxiation and because the spinal cord was crushed. The steel collar must be larger in size than the victim’s neck to prevent strangulation, but, at the same time, tight enough to immobilize the head and the neck. Preventing neck and head movement was necessary because it allowed the victim’s cervical vertebrae to be penetrated by a steel tip, moved by a screw mechanism positioned in the rear of the pole. In theory, such penetration was to be quick and precise, thus, able to administer a rapid and certain death.

Some versions of this device incorporated a fixed metal blade or spike directed at the spinal cord, to hasten the breaking of the neck. The spiked version, called the Catalan garrote, was used as late as 1897 in Spain but would continue up to 1940 in Cuba (as well as being used by some other colonies until shortly after the 1898 Spanish-American War). A further alternate device involved two metallic squares covered with leather, of which the upper one moved over the bottom one when the executioner turned the lever, breaking the inmate’s neck trapped inside. In some versions, two brass collars were used. One collar was attached to the lever whilst the other was fixed to the post. Both collars were hinged to admit the prisoner’s neck. When all preparations were complete, the executioner operated the mechanism forcing one collar outwards whilst the other remained stationary thus, if correctly adjusted, dislocating the prisoner’s neck and causing immediate unconsciousness followed by death.

In most cases, the prisoner lost consciousness quite quickly and was dead after a few minutes. Garrotting, even in its later forms, could never guarantee an instant loss of consciousness and was never considered to be as quick or humane as hanging.

So chastity belts and their usage are rather recent phenomena, and in the vast majority of the cases, women were not forced to use it. Despite the common misconception, the use of the chastity belt was not usually imposed by men on women in order to force them to be faithful. If we use medieval poetry as a reliable source, we discover that the use of chastity belts was often in consensus between both parties. Real chastity belts became available later, and the majority of chastity belts were bought in the 19th Century, in England, by women. Often they would use the apparatus to avoid the consequences of sexual harassment in the workplace. In the 19th Century it was mostly used to avoid sexual advances of horny employers.

There are many different models of female chastity belts. Female chastity belts often take the form of a lockable harness which passes between the legs and around the waist. The classical version for women consists of a metal belt and a metal band runnig trough the legs with a hole for urination and a hole for defactation. The belt is closed and connected with the band with a lock. Another models, consisting of a metal belt, a shield covering the vulva, connected to the belt, and one or two chains attaching the shield with the belt, the chains running over the buttocks, or the chain running between the buttocks, dividing the faces in two parts. The chair of torture, also known as the witch’s chair, the chair of spikes, the interrogation chair – a commonly used torture device from the Middle Ages contained a lot of spikes or needles that would pierce the skin of the victim everywhere their skin touched the chair. There was no rest, for the wicked or anyone else who sat in this thing. The chair of torture dates back to the Middle Ages but may have been used till the late 19th Century. These implements were used in Germany up until the 19th century, in Italy and in Spain up until the end of the 1700s, in France and in other central European countries, according to certain sources, up until the end of 1800.

This instrument of torture comes in different versions. These chairs have different shapes and sizes, but they were all equipped with spines and immobilization of the victim. All of them have common characteristics, in that they are covered with spikes on the back, on the arm-rests, on the seat, on the leg-rests, and on the foot-rests. The chair itself contains up to 2000 metal spikes in addition to a means of fixing the victim into the chair, and applying pressure to force the person’s body, or appendages more firmly against the spikes. The bars, either made of iron or wood, fastened the victim around the waist, around the wrists, and around the chest or bust. It’s easy to comprehend the effect of the spikes piercing the victim’s body made even more effective by a screw bar system to immobilize the victim and make the pins penetrate more deeply. The seat was often made of iron that could be heated. Some spiked seat had holes to allow the victim’s bottom to be ‘heated’ by hot coals placed under the seat, causing painful burns, but still keeping the victim conscious.

The victim, always naked, was strapped within the chair using tight leather straps. The initial pain of hundreds of sharp rusty spikes penetrating the flesh could always be increased by the torturer forcibly pressing the prisoner down or back against the spikes. Variations (without spikes) were used to bind the victim so that the torturer could easily baste his or her feet with lard or oil heated by nearby braziers. The victim’s wrists were strapped in to prevent movement, while bars and other movable parts pressed against the limbs ensuring the tips penetrated the flesh deeper.

While quite painful, the chair itself was not always immediately fatal. A quick death was far from guaranteed. The purpose was to perforate the flesh with a great deal of pain but without immediately damaging critical organs. No vital organs were pierced and the pressure of the spikes themselves plugged wounds, slowing blood loss and often keeping victims alive for a day or more. The victim would be alive until his blood slowly drained out of his body. If the victim has been released, an infection and tetanus killed her in a week or two after their ordeal.

But the strength of this instrument lies mainly in the psychological terror it causes and the threat that the torture will get increasingly worse, conforming to a model where the pain starts off easy and then gets progressively worse. The idea is that the Inquisitors can interrupt it at any stage, upon visual inspection of the damages that have been inflicted. The psychological fear these torture devices aroused was often enough to extract a confession, and victims were frequently forced to watch others subjected to the treatment and witness the pain they too could soon be facing. There are records of people committing suicide before actually being subject to this torture.
