Body Piercing

Ring in the nose, chain from ear to nose, ring in the eyebrow, pierced belly button, nipples and tongue piercing, and even clitoris piercing. These are a number of different ways BDSM people choose to decorate themselves.

Though some of these may look interesting and can be seen as a statement of personality, there are many risk factors involved. One of these risks is infection. If the area that was pierced is not cleaned properly, bacteria may get under the skin and an infection could result. If an infection isn’t taken care of immediately, you could get gangrene.

Protect yourself and use common sense and for those travelling the less used routes of Body Modification we hope you are doing it for all the right reasons. The tip besides the obvious don’t go ramming bits of metal through your flesh just anywhere or allowing some idiot that has read four web sites do it either. Because body modification involves breaching one of the body’s main protective barriers, the skin, it brings with it a high risk of infection if done improperly. Risks include hepatitis, tetanus, and HIV, which can lead to AIDS. Less serious local infections can cause illness, deformity and scarring. The risk of infection increases when people perform the body modification on themselves and each other.

Get professional advice, better still get a professional to actually do it. Why lose the use of anything you have because of nerve or tissue damage. There are certain places on the tongue that should not be pierced. It must be pierced in an area just behind the place where two veins join on the underside of the tongue. If not it can bleed a lot if any veins are punctured. Don’t get any piercing if you are pregnant. Plan what you want to do, ask questions, ask endless questions. Of course it does not concern the general, domestic body modifications here, You really owe it to your body and your mind to make the right decisions, informed decisions.

Look for the professional that suits you best someone who is kink friendly, understands where you are coming from. Listen to what they have to say. Realise that it takes time to achieve results. The body has its own pace for allowing change. Don’t go against that. Body modification is or should be an art form.

Make sure an Autoclave (heat sterilization machine regulated by the Food and Drug Administration) is on the premises and is used to sterilize all non-disposable instruments, like forceps, and they are stored in sealed sterile bags.

Make sure piercing needles are in sterile packages, used only once and discarded in a biohazard container.

Instruments, supplies and equipment that cannot be autoclaved are disinfected after each use with a commercial disinfectant or bleach solution, this includes the crouch, bench, chair or whatever support you are actually on at the time of piercing.

A fresh pair of latex gloves is used for each procedure. If the piercer opens drawers or answers the phone while performing a procedure, and does not change gloves he or she is leaving you open to infection.

The premises, including bathroom, are clean and disinfected frequently.

Jewellery used in piercing is non-allergenic only (stainless steel [300 series], gold, niobium, titanium or platinum) and hasn’t been previously used or worn or has been autoclaved.

You should find out how they learned to pierce, and how long they’ve been piercing. It takes a lot of practice (while directly supervised by a qualified piercer) to learn proper technique. Talk to a few of their customers and view their piercings. Ask what the experience was like? How well did it heal? Was the piercer available for consultation after the piercing?

Be aware “Piercing guns,” which historically have been used in places that strictly do ear-piercing, should not be used for any kind of piercing. Never! let anyone pierce any part of your body (other than your ear lobe) with an ear piercing gun. This includes nostrils! These devices typically can’t be autoclaved, meaning there is a greater risk of infection. Also, by design, these guns make a less precise incision, also raising your risk of infection.
