If you engage in percussion play – and it doesn’t matter if it is flagellation with canes, whips, floggers, crops, pieces of 4 by 2 or strands of liquorice, there are going to be times, more often than not, where there will be bruising to the tissue no matter how safely you play. It may be severe or mild depending on the level of play and the period one has actually engaged in that particular play. Some submissive/bottoms develop what is called the leather bottom, a thickening of the skin tissue in that area, especially if percussion play is a prominent part of their BDSM play.

Bruising is an area of discolored skin. It develops when the lining of small blood vessels are damaged, allowing blood cells to escape into the skin and tissues. A bruise may be very small and may blend in with the texture of the skin, or it may be large, swollen, and painful. A bruise usually starts out as a red area or as tiny red dots or splotches on the skin. Within days to a week or so, the bruise becomes more purple. As it heals, it becomes brownish-yellow. Generally, bruises heal and disappear within 2 to 3 weeks. To minimize swelling, pain, and bruising after a traumatic injury, always apply cold compresses to the injured area as soon as possible and keep them on for most of the first twelve hours, with occasional breaks to prevent excessive chilling. Take homeopathic arnica tablets and massage tincture of arnica into the bruised area. Homeopathic remedies, used as first aid, can soothe the pain and soreness of bruises that come from injury, reduce swelling and fluid leakage into surrounding tissues, and generally encourage healing. A carefully-chosen remedy may also help correct a person’s tendency toward easy bruising and soreness.

Arnica is probably the most widely used in the BDSM Community for bruising and contusions. Arnica is also known as: Arnica montana, mountain daisy, leopard’s bane, wolf’s bane, mountain tobacco. Arnica is an excellent treatment for muscles sprains, trauma, bruises, contusions, accelerate wound healing, control pain, trains, stiffness, swelling and local tenderness. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities that can reduce pain and swelling, improving wound healing. It is utilized in two ways: externally, as an ointment, several commercially prepared ointments are available which are safe to use externally as needed, and internally, as a homeopathic remedy either in droplet form, applied under the tongue, or tablets.

Homeopathic arnica tablets may be taken separately or along with external applications. Arnica tablets work quickly, and have no side effects. They are available in potencies ranging from 6x or 6c (low potency) to 200c (high potency). A good general-use potency is 30x. Dosages can range from one pill every eight hours to four pills an hour, depending upon need. Suggested dosage rates will be printed on the packaging. Externally, tinctures and ointments of arnica may be applied freely to the affected area and massaged in. Arnica effectively reduces pain and swelling, and promotes rapid healing. Arnica ointments should NEVER be applied to broken skin and you should NOT take arnica internally unless it is a proper dilution.

You can prepare your own tincture of this herb as follows: pour 1/2 liter (one pint) of 70% alcohol over 50 grams (two ounces) of freshly arnica picked flowers. Seal it tightly in a clear glass container and let it stand for at least a week in the sun or in a warm place. Filter it and it is ready for use. To store it, put the tincture in a sealed container and keep it out of direct sunlight. This is NOT suitable for internal use. It is for external use only.

The active components in arnica are sesquiterpene lactones, which are known to reduce inflammation and decrease pain. Other active principals are thymol (an essential oil), flavonoids, inulin, carotenoids and tannins. Arnica works by stimulating the activity of white blood cells that perform much of the digestion of congested blood, and by dispersing trapped, disorganized fluids from bumped and bruised tissue, joints and muscles. Because Arnica stimulates blood circulation it can raise blood pressure, especially in the coronary arteries. There are a few people who may be sensitive to the compound helenalin that is in arnica. If you develop a mild rash, then you probably are one of those people and should stop using arnica immediately.

There are other treatments which can be applied:

Pineapple Enzyme Bromelain: Is a very effective treatment for severe bruises and hematomas, available in capsules at health-food stores. This enzyme is absorbed from the GI tract and is able to promote healing of tissue injuries. The dose is 200 to 400 milligrams three times a day, taken on an empty stomach (at least ninety minutes before or three hours after eating). Occasionally individuals may develop an allergic rash from bromelain; discontinue it if you develop any itching.

Bellis perennis: This remedy is helpful for injuries and bruises, especially those caused by trauma to the trunk or in deeper tissues. When a bruised and injured area develops a feeling of stiffness or coldness, Bellis perennis is strongly indicated. It may also be effective for bruises (in any area) that do not respond to Arnica.

Ledum palustre: This remedy is indicated when bruises or bruise-type injuries such as sprains and strains become very puffy and swollen, and cold applications such as ice-packs or cold soaks bring some relief. Black eyes (which usually meet those two criteria) often respond to Ledum.

Magnesium: Taking of 200mg to 400mg of magnesium two or three times a day reduces muscle soreness and is good for muscle cramping. Epsom salts, the mineral bath soother that relaxes muscles after a hard day with the flogger, is made from another form of magnesium – magnesium sulphate. Do not drink Epsom salts you will discover the meaning of “it went through me like a dose of salts”.

Calendula and Tea-Tree Oil: Cuts and scratches need care to make sure they don’t infect. Calendula, the golden flower that smells a bit like wallaby piss, is a tremendous antiseptic and skin healer as it tends to dry out wounds. It can be purchased as a cream or lotion. Tea-Tree oil is another natural antibiotic and helps skin to heal fast.

Calcarea phosphorica: This remedy is often indicated for bone-bruises, as well as other kinds of pain and soreness in the bones, especially when the area feels cold and numb. This remedy is also used when fractures are slow to heal.

Hypericum: This remedy is best for bruising or crushing injuries to body areas containing many nerves: smashed fingertips and toes, injuries to the spine or genitals, bruising or displacement of the tailbone, and injuries to the eyeball. Nerve pain after root canals may also be helped with Hypericum.

Lavender Oil: Use a cold compress by soaking a cloth in cold water and adding approximately 2-5 drops of lavender oil. Hold the compress on the affected area for approximately 15 minutes to relieve pain and swelling.

Vitamin C: Some people bruise much more easily than others. Vitamin C may correct this tendency by strengthening the walls of blood capillaries. Try 2, 000 milligrams of vitamin C three times a day.

Like all things common sense applies here. If the trauma is such that it does not react to treatment, if there is continued bleeding into the tissue seek professional medical attention. Don’t be put off because your bum happens to have bruising and marks synonymous with BDSM. Your health comes before all things and certainly a bit of embarrassment.
